Available Now NEWS Genius Rev Driven by TWC Titles Continued from page 10 www.homemediamagazine.com for theatrical releases comparable to thirdparty rates, considering it would benefit as Genius’ majority shareholder. “We fail to see why [Weinstein] doesn’t simplify [Genius’] corporate structure to better represent operations,” Bank wrote. Genius said it also shifted a large number of direct-to-video titles from 2007 to 2008. Executives said the company will distribute 13 theatrical TWC releases, down from 17 releases last year. The theatrical releases accounted for 61% of overall 2007 revenue, down from 88% in 2006. Genius is planning on Weinstein box office releases to account for only 35% of revenue in 2008, due to a number of them not impacting home entertainment revenue until 2009. However, the distributor in 2008 plans to increase Weinstein DTV releases, for which it will receive an unspecified increased percent- age of revenue. Drinkwater said Genius will begin distributing titles on Blu-ray Disc in the second half of 2008. The company is increasing its stake in video game distribution and direct-response distribution in 2008. Revenue for the quarter topped $185 million, up 144% from $76 million last year, driven largely by $67.6 million in Weinstein Co. DVD sales, including Planet Terror, 1408, Michael Moore’s health care documentary Sicko, Halloween and The Nanny Diaries. For fiscal 2007, net revenue increased 72% to $474 million ($651 million gross) from $275 million during the same period last year. Genius had projected full-year revenue from $750 million to $800 million. The distributor is forecasting revenue from $600 million to $700 million in 2008, based in part on a 10% revenue increase from Weinstein content. All of the industries involved have undergone an attitude adjustment in the past three years, he said. “In 2005 content owners thought P2P was a dirty word,” he said. However, since 2006, Levitan said, 18 million people have installed Pando on their computers. NBC has just launched a site that lets consumers stream or download its programming with undeletable commercials embedded. Using Pando, NBC “has moved from losing money on every download to making money on every download,” Levitan said. “You will see more and more ad-supported content available to consumers for free,” he said. “P2P is going to make that business model work.” Also at the conference, the P4P Working Group, a collaboration between ISPs, P2P software distributors and technology researchers, announced its field trail results. According to the Working Group, ISPs, implementing a mechanism through which they can communicate with P2P software programs about network status and policies, can ultimately benefit from customer use of P2P. Initial field trial results indicate that P4P enhanced download rates for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and averaged 205% the speed of unmanaged P2P downloads. Some FTTH users saw as much as 665% the download speed of unmanaged P2P.
