Arnold t was a tough battle, but in the end Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s Enchanted narrowly triumphed over Warner Home Video’s blockbuster I Am Legend to nail down the No. 1 spot on the national DVD sales chart for the week that ended March 23. I Am Legend earned $256.2 million at the box office, more than twice as much as Enchanted, which took in $127.8 million. But the sales appeal of family titles propelled the Disney film to the top spot on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart nonetheless — although Legend did debut at No. 1 on Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart, with estimated rental earnings of $11 million. Enchanted bowed at No. 3, with $8.5 million. I Sandwiched between the two new releases was holdover No Country for Old Men, from Disney/Miramax, which pulled in $9.2 million its sophomore week to bring its total rental earnings so far to $19.4 million, more than a quarter of its theatrical gross. Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s Atonement, which grossed $50.1 million in theaters and picked up an Oscar for best original score, debuted at No. 4 on the sales chart and No. 5 on the rental chart, with estimated rental earnings of $7.3 million. The week’s top Blu-ray Disc seller was I Am Legend, which sold four times as many copies as Enchanted — not surprising, given the fact that the next-generation format is still in the early adopter stage, a demographic of mostly young adult men.
