Respondents who did watch mobile video did so in “snack”sized bites (71%), with 41% watching between daily activities, 16% while waiting in line and 14% while in transit. The study also showed 43% of respondents saying perceived cost was the No. 1 reason they had not tried mobile TV and video, and that 54% would watch short, targeted advertising on mobile devices in order to have free access to mobile content. – Billy Gil I COMCAST COLLABORATES WITH BITTORRENT Comcast Corp. is now collaborating with BitTorrent Inc. to facilitate better ways to transport large files over the Internet. Comcast is under FCC investigation for allegedly breaking Internet neutrality guidelines by blocking online subscriber peer-to-peer file sharing. Comcast has maintained that its practices were a necessary means of network management, but said it will no longer target files based on the type of protocol used, according to The Associated Press. – Kyra Kudick Showtime Offers First Episode of ‘Tudors’ Through Web and Mobile By Chris Tribbey howtime Networks is getting inventive in promoting the launch of season two of “The Tudors.” To promote the March 30 premiere of the second season, Showtime offered the first episode of the first season on dozens of outlets, including Yahoo, Amazon Unbox, MSN, YouTube, iTunes, Gather.com and more. Verizon Wireless and other mobile providers also carried the episode. “The strategy to release a full episode on digital platforms has proven to be a very effective tool for Showtime, not only increasing consumers’ exposure to premium television programs, but also to help drive subscriptions to the network,” said Robert Hayes, SVP of the Showtime Digital Group. “We had a tremendously successful launch for ‘The Tudors’ last year, and we have expanded the reach of the campaign to even more digital platforms this year. This is our most ambitious multiplatform push yet to subscribers and non subscribers, and we expect to have a combined reach of over 190 million users.” S I RESEARCH FIRM LAUNCHES DIGITAL HOME COVERAGE Spurred by findings that 65% of living rooms have PCs in them, JupiterResearch, which studies the impact of the Web and consumer technologies on business, has launched a digital home coverage area. The division’s first report, “Digital Home: Moving Beyond the Concept of the Three Screens to Uncover New Revenue Opportunities,” found that 22% of homes have three or more PCs, with 6% watching video stored on their computers via their TV sets and 5% watching TV content stored on the PC via the TV set. – Billy Gil I REPORT: CONSUMERS FRUSTRATED WITH MOBILE MEDIA A survey from Bamboo MediaCasting indicates the mobile media industry faces frustration from consumers regarding image quality, bandwidth limitations and the overall consumer experience. Bamboo MediaCasting, in association with Synovate, in March surveyed 1,000 online consumers and found that 51% of total respondents expected mobile video subscriptions would be too expensive; of respondents who did not cite cost, 45.5% thought image quality would be poor, 27% cited loading-speed issues, 17% thought the process would be too complex and 10% anticipated limited content choices. The survey also found women were more likely to be concerned with image quality (48% versus 43%) and the youngest demographic (ages 14-18) were least concerned with image quality and most concerned with download speed. – Billy Gil Report: Targeted Ads Key to VOD Profitability By Erik Gruenwedel hile video-on-demand (VOD) has been around for years, more than 90% is free, resulting in a scant return on investment. With consumers increasingly accustomed to procuring entertainment online and on their time schedules via digital video recorder, a new report suggests targeted advertising could transform VOD into incremental revenue. The key, says ABI Research ana- W I SURVEY: CONSUMERS CLUELESS ABOUT MOBILE VIDEO Nearly half of U.S. mobile phone customers between ages 18 and 34 don’t know if their mobile carriers carry mobile TV or video service. A survey by QuickPlay Media indicated 47% of respondents lyst Paulhwa Lee, is to monetize content by bundling it with ads directed at specific audiences. Lee said VOD affords programming the ability to connect advertisers with select audiences in a more qualified manner. To reach scalability for advertisers in North America, VOD providers are attempting to establish 100% “concurrency rates,” or the number of subscribing households capable of accessing VOD at any given time. The report cited examples in Canada where programmers targeted specific ads to connoisseurs of Bollywood movies and Cantonese-language content. “VOD providers have two sources of revenue,” she said. “End-users pay for a la carte and subscription fees, while sponsors pay for advertising. The goal is to tailor interactive advertising to the individual viewer. Progress has been made toward that goal, but it is by no means perfected yet.” TOP 5 RANK TITLE E LE C T R O NI C SELLT H R OUG H Week ended March 29, 2008 RELEASE DATE VIDEO LABEL GENRE TOP 5 RANK TITLE E L E C TRO N I C S E L L THRO U GH Week ended March 30, 2008 RELEASE DATE VIDEO LABEL GENRE 1 2 3 4 5 I Am Legend Dexter: Season 1 — Episode 6 Atonement Hitman The Tudors: Season 1 — Episode 1 3/18/08 7/2/07 3/18/08 3/11/08 1/1/08 Warner Showtime Universal Fox Showtime Sci-Fi Drama Drama Action Drama Source: Movielink 1 2 3 4 5 I Am Legend Justice League: The New Frontier No Country for Old Men Appleseed: Ex Machina Hitman 3/18/08 2/26/08 3/11/08 3/11/08 3/11/08 Warner Warner Disney/Miramax Warner Fox Sci-Fi Animated Drama Anime Action Source: CinemaNow TOP 5 RANK TITLE E LE CT R O NIC D OW NLOAD S Week ended March 29, 2008 RELEASE DATE VIDEO LABEL GENRE TOP 5 RANK TITLE E L E C TRO N I C DO WN L O A DS Week ended March 30, 2008 RELEASE DATE VIDEO LABEL GENRE 1 2 3 4 5 We Own the Night Chaos Into the Wild The Darjeeling Limited August Rush 3/28/08 3/19/08 3/28/08 3/26/08 3/11/08 Sony Pictures Lionsgate Paramount Fox Warner Drama Action Drama Comedy Drama Source: Movielink 1 2 3 4 5 Gone Baby Gone We Own the Night August Rush Chaos Into the Wild 3/13/08 3/28/08 3/11/08 3/19/08 3/25/08 Disney/Miramax Sony Pictures Warner Lionsgate Paramount Drama Drama Drama Action Drama Source: CinemaNow April 6–12, 2008 Home Media Magazine 13 http://www.homemediamagazine.com http://Gather.com
