Home Media Magazine - April 6-12, 2008 - (Page 38) NEWS www.homemediamagazine.com Chipmunks Tour Kicks Off By Chris Tribbey oss Bagdasarian Jr., son of the creator of “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” said his late father would be pleased with the 2007 version of the furry little band. “I think he’d be surprised that I did [the voice for Alvin], since that was what he always did,” Bagdasarian said during a 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment kick-off party for the April 1 DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases of the film. Fox kicked off a cross-country, threeweek “Get Munk’D Tour” in Los Angeles March 27, raising $30,000 for R the VH1 Save the Music Foundation in the process. The voice actors for Alvin, Simon and Theodore — as well as the chipmunks themselves — joined actor Jason Lee and teen music artists Keke Palmer and T-Squad for a concert and kids carnival at the El Rey Theater, with more than 500 people attending. The concert was the start to a 13-city mall tour running through April 13, said Steve Feldstein, SVP of marketing and corporate communications for Fox Home Entertainment. The tour next hits Minneapolis and Seattle April 6, Atlanta and San Francisco April 11, and St. Louis and San Diego April 13. Along with performances of songs from the film, the tour includes giveaways, Panasonic flash drives with digital photos of the film, and dance lessons and video game stations. Feldstein said Fox has high hopes for Blu-ray sales of Alvin and the Chipmunks. “A lot of families have PlayStation 3s, and you’ve seen the uptick in Blu-ray sales,” he said. “The quality of the image is amazing on the DVD, and you’d think it can’t get any better,” Bagdasarian said. “But you’d be wrong. It can get better. The Blu-ray is unbelievable.” (L-R) Janice Bagdasarian (wife of Ross Bagdasarian Jr.), actress Cameron Richardson, Ross Bagdasarian Jr. (son of “Chipmunks” creator), stars Jason Lee and Jesse McCartney, and Fox’s Steve Feldstein at the Alvin and the Chipmunks DVD release party and charity concert March 27 at the El Rey Theater in Hollywood, Calif. Initial contacts between SAG and producers reportedly found studios unwilling to consider any hike in DVD residuals. Alan Rosenberg, president of SAG, remained unmoved. He told The Los Angeles Times he considered revenue from new media (Web and mobile phone) distribution “negligible” and temporary, compared to DVD. “DVDs are still the biggest source of income for studios, and we’ve never improved upon the pathetically low residual formula,” Rosenberg said. He and Doug Allen, SAG national executive director and chief negotiator, have said actors have different issues that are not addressed in the separate Directors Guild of America and WGA deals. “Now that we have concluded our wages and working conditions process and the SAG national board has approved our proposal package, we look forward to productive negotiations,” Allen said in a statement. Officially, SAG’s proposal to producers hasn’t been made public. SAG spokesperson Pamela Greenwald declined further comment. Warner. 2007. Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Sean P. Hayes, Rob Morrow.
