Arnold lvin and the Chipmunks, from 20th Century Fox, didn’t just top the national DVD sales chart its first week in stores, it beat by a wide margin fellow newcomer Sweeney Todd, from Paramount and DreamWorks. The family comedy also managed to best Sweeney in rental stores, topping Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week that ended April 6, with estimated revenue of $8.7 million, to $8.1 million for the Johnny Depp musical, which grossed $52.9 million in theaters. Generally movies aimed at kids, such as Alvin, are an automatic purchase for parents, at the expense of rentals. Last week, Fox said consumers snapped up A 2.6 million Alvin discs on its first day in stores, the equivalent of about $45 million in spending. That’s slightly more money than the film made in theaters its opening weekend ($44.3 million). No other new releases made the top 10 on either the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart or Home Media Magazine’s rental chart. Warner’s I Am Legend, No. 1 on both charts the previous week, slipped to No. 3 on both the sales and rental charts. In rental stores the actioner generated an additional $7.4 million to bring its total take, after three weeks, to $27.5 million. The top-selling Blu-ray Disc for the week was Alvin and the Chipmunks, with the previous week’s topper, I Am Legend, slipping to No. 2.
