At the height of its success, “Wild America” had 18 camera crews working in the field across the nation, with Stouffer coordinating it as the director and host of the award-winning nature series. Now he sits in his Arkansas home, collecting royalty checks from DVD sales via Topics Entertainment. “I’m very proud of the ‘Wild America’ series,” he said. “We didn’t realize at the time that we were creating a national treasure.” Aug. 14 Topics will release a two-disc Wild America Predators DVD pack for $14.99, and Oct. 2 comes the Wild America Predators of the World set for $69.99 (prebook Sept. 11). Stouffer went from producing educational films and selling them one-by-one to schools and Boy Scout troops, to creating a series that drew an average of more than 6 million viewers a night. The key with the “Wild America” DVDs thus far — three are out — is the price, said Topics Entertainment President Greg James. The DVD sets have been going for $69.99 with 60 episodes in each box, or more than 30 hours of programming. James said more than 10,000 units of each boxed set have sold. James said the series can be split up and repackaged in a variety of ways, such as a game animal set, or a bass fish set, targeted at a specific audience and at specific retail spots. “I think there’s a market there, in bass shops and those types of retailers,” James said. “They’re evergreen.
