After a 42-city limited theatrical release, Chalk will street on DVD Sept. 25 (prebook Aug. 28) at $24.98. It’s Arts Alliance’s first theatrical foray since it morphed from Hart Sharp Video. “It’s a comedy shot in the style of ‘The Office,’” said director Mike Akel. “It looks real, but it’s not.” He and co-writer Chris Mass (who stars as the lead teacher in the film) grew up in Arkansas together, and the film is a reflection of their views of the classroom, they said. “We didn’t want to be preachy,” Mass said. “It goes back to the classic ways of getting a message across with comedy. With comedy, you really break down the walls.” Chalk follows several teachers at the start of a new school year at Harrison High, who get it from both sides: students who are rowdy, uncontrollable and possibly smarter than their teachers, and administrators who have forgotten what it’s like to handle the kids. “What’s been cool to hear is, ‘Wow, I didn’t realize the teachers had it so rough,’” Akel said.
