Home Media Magazine - August 19-25, 2007 - (Page 16) TV DVD Edited by John Latchem www.homemediamagazine.com Riding the ‘Wildfire’ UP Second season of ABC Family hit finally on DVD COM I NG I BBC VIDEO Sept. 18 presents Jekyll (two-DVD set $34.98). By John Latchem he teen soap opera “Wildfire” debuted in June 2005 and is preparing to enter its fourth season on ABC Family. But fans looking to catch up have been able to see only the first season on DVD, released by Lionsgate way back in February 2006. “The DVD has performed very well over time,” said Jenna Sonenshein, brand manager for Lionsgate. “People are still discovering the show.” Sales of the first-season DVD spiked during the third season, which ended in March. This gave Lionsgate more than enough justification to revisit the series on DVD, Sonenshein said. “The show has a good, strong fan base,” Sonenshein said. “We checked out the message boards, and there were lots of posts asking for the second season.” The second season finally hits on DVD Nov. 6 (prebook Oct. 10) at $39.98. The three-DVD set will come in a standard Amaray case with a metallic o-ring depicting a sunset. “Wildfire” stars Genevieve Cortese as Kris Furillo, a juvenile delinquent who starts to turn her life around by working as a horse jockey and groom at the Raintree Farm, where she befriends a racehorse named Wildfire. In the second season, Kris and Wildfire must adjust to fame following their racing success. “On one level, it’s a story about her connection to the horse,” Sonenshein said. “But it’s also a bit dramatic.” T Sonenshein said the show does particularly well with teenage girls, but also resonates with their mothers. Lionsgate plans to cross-promote the DVD set with ABC Family during the upcoming fourth season and is preparing an online marketing campaign. “We think the demographic is perfect for online marketing,” Sonenshein said. “The show has a good outreach to girls interested in horseback riding and girls who love animals.” “Wildfire” also has a strong musical component, and Lionsgate hopes to take advantage of that with a special feature focusing on the show’s music, which features artists such as James Blunt. The music featurette is still not a certainty, Sonenshein said, due to various factors and rights issues, but if it makes its way to the DVD it will include interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. Each of the 13 episodes will include cast and crew commentaries, Sonenshein said. Lionsgate also plans a renewed push for the first-season DVD, which makes sense given the time elapsed since its release. “From a catalog perspective, we will make sure people know season one is still available,” Sonenshein said. “Wildfire” was co-created by the late Michael Pillar, the longtime “Star Trek” writer who helped develop USA Network’s “The Dead Zone” TV series, also released on DVD by Lionsgate.
