Warner Home Video is focusing on classic characters this season. Timeless cartoons celebrate the holidays with the Oct. 2 release of Tom and Jerry: A Nutcracker Tale (DVD $19.98) and A Flintstones Christmas Carol (DVD $14.98). America’s favorite mischievous child joins the fun with the Nov. 6 (prebook Oct. 9) release of A Dennis the Menace Christmas (DVD $19.97). Starz Home Entertainment will deliver holiday cheer with one of the most beloved children’s characters, Thomas the Tank Engine. Thomas & Friends: Ultimate Christmas arrives Oct. 23 (prebook Sept. 20) on DVD for $14.98, or $16.98 with a special holiday train. Features include DVD games such as “Match the Snowflake,” a read-along story “Thomas and the Missing Christmas Tree,” and two sing-along songs, “The Snow Song” and “Winter Wonderland.” Toys take center stage Sept. 18 with Image Entertainment’s The Toys That Rescued Christmas (DVD $9.99). Smuckey, a wisecracking sock monkey, and his friends sing their way to saving Christmas. The DVD includes a commentary and a making-of featurette. The holiday music continues Nov. 6 (prebook Oct. 10) with Doodlebops: Happy Doodle Holiday (DVD $14.98) from Lionsgate. Rooney, Deedee and Moe embark on an exciting sleigh ride filled with songs. A ride through a winter wonderland may take the kids to a winter webland Nov. 6 (prebook Oct. 10) in Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Friends: Hum Bug (DVD $9.98), also from Lionsgate. Squirt, Bounce and Snowdrop take children on an adventure through the snow to the top of O’ Big Tree. Pets save the day Oct. 2 in Wonder Pets! Save the Reindeer! (DVD $16.99) from Paramount Home Entertainment. After one of Santa’s reindeer goes missing, it’s Linny the Guinea Pig, Ming-Ming Duckling and Turtle Tuck to the rescue. More animals are featured Oct. 2 in Max & Ruby: A Merry Bunny Christmas (DVD $16.99), also from Paramount. Porchlight Home Entertainment has three holiday DVDs for kids to enjoy with their families. All DVDs are $14.98 each. Oct. 30 (prebook Sept. 26) comes LeapFrog Presents a Tad of Christmas Cheer. It’s Christmas Eve, and everyone in the Frog Family is getting ready to celebrate the holidays and the arrival of a new baby. A magical fairy god-bug takes Tad on a journey during which he gains a new appreciation and love for everyone in his family. Arriving the same day is “Holidaze” The Christmas That Almost Didn’t Happen, about Rusty the Reindeer, who heads to the big city. After a series of comical misadventures, he discovers the meaning of Christmas. The Family Holiday, which streets Nov. 6 (prebook Oct. 3), tells the story of con man Donald “Doc” Holiday. Before he can inherit his uncle’s fortune, he must become the perfect family man. In doing so, he finds the meaning of Christmas. Fox and MGM Bestow Holiday Three-Packs By Billy Gil wentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and MGM Home Entertainment are delivering three-packs of classic holiday films Oct. 16. Orders are due Sept. 19. The Holiday Fare 3-Pack ($24.98) includes Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, It’s a Very Muppet Christmas Movie and Prancer. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, starring Dick Van Dyke, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The 2002 TV-movie It’s a Very Muppet Christmas Movie features appearances by Whoopi Goldberg, David Arquette and Joan Cusack. Prancer (1989) stars Sam Elliott and Cloris Leachman. The Holiday Classics Collection ($29.98) includes The Bishop’s Wife, The March of the Wooden Soldiers and Pocket Full of Miracles. The Bishop’s Wife stars Cary Grant and Loretta Young. March of the Wooden Soldiers stars Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Frank Capra’s 1961 Pocket Full of Miracles was nominated for three Oscars. The Family Classics Giftset ($24.98) includes The Black Stallion, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Yours, Mine and Ours. The 1979 film The Black Stallion tells of the adventures of a boy and a wild Arabian stallion. Yours, Mine and Ours is a Golden Globe-nominated comedy from 1968, starring Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda (not to be confused with the 2005 remake, starring Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo).
