The fourth quarter is traditionally the most important period for the video industry, in which studios roll out their biggest hits of the summer and customers feverishly buy videos both for themselves and for friends and family as gifts. But 2007 will be the first big fourth quarter for the two high-def disc formats. Last year the hardware offerings were limited, but this year both hardware and software are ready for prime-time holiday shopping. Both formats will see high-profile releases in the fourth quarter, and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, in conjunction with Panasonic, is rolling out the red (er, Blu) carpet, inviting consumers to take a look at Blu-ray Disc at malls across the country. Get ready to go inside the maelstrom in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End on Blu-ray. For the kids, Disney’s Blu-ray group will drive out Cars. Plan to see Universal’s riveting spy thriller The Bourne Ultimatum in higher resolution than ever before on HD DVD. Spidey will swing to Blu-ray in all three movies from Sony. Also landing in high-def are classics such as Sony’s Blu-ray edition of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Even cult hits such as Starz’s Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Evil Dead and Halloween will scare up audiences in clearer color and sound on Blu-ray. Folks who bought their HDTVs for the Super Bowl or plan to buy them as gifts for the holidays also will find an array of reasonably priced high-definition hardware in stores for the holiday season and a slate of enticing high-def movies to satisfy everyone in the family.
