Arnold he fourth quarter may not yet have officially begun, but already studios are rolling out choice releases that may be light on box office, but high on niche appeal. The top seven sellers on the national DVD sales chart for the week ended Sept. 23 are all new releases, led by a pair of theatrical sleepers: Warner Home Video’s We Are Marshall at No. 1 and Genius/The Weinstein Co.’s Death Proof at a strong No. 2. The third spot on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart was claimed by 20th Century Fox’s fifth volume of “Family Guy” TV episodes, while a pair of direct-to-video features, Warner’s Superman: Doomsday and Universal Studios’ Barbie as the Island Princess, took positions four and five. Warner’s Smallville: The Complete Sixth Season debuted at No. 6 on the sales chart, while Lionsgate’s The Condemned, an action thriller that grossed $7.3 million in theaters, bowed at No. 7. T Disney’s season-three TV DVD set of “Grey’s Anatomy,” which debuted at No. 1 last week, finished at No. 8 its sophomore week in stores. In rental stores, We Are Marshall also was No. 1, with estimated rental revenue of $4.6 million, according to Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week. The Condemned bowed at No. 2, with $4.2 million, bumping the previous week’s top renter, Paramount/DreamWorks’ Blades of Glory, to No. 3. Death Proof, one-half of the gory Grindhouse theatrical feature, debuted at No. 4 on the rental chart its first week out, with estimated earnings of $2.9 million. On the high-definition disc charts, the long reign of Warner’s 300 atop both the Blu-ray Disc and the HD DVD charts came to an end, with a pair of hot new releases, both from Warner, storming to the top. On Blu-ray, it was the director’s cut of Troy; on the HD DVD chart, it was We Are Marshall.
