Home Media Magazine - September 30 - October 6, 2007 - (Page 30) NEWS www.homemediamagazine.com Stomping to HD DVD Nov. 13 By Chris Tribbey P R O D U C T DreamWorks Animation SKG has followed through with an announcement that many knew was coming, but still crossed their fingers for: The HD DVD release of the international blockbuster Shrek the Third will street day and date with the DVD Nov. 13. Distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment, the HD DVD will feature several exclusive features not included on the DVD: a feature-length, picture-in-picture storyboard reel that branches to lost scenes; a customized-menu option allowing viewers to choose from themes surrounding their favorite character; and three Web-enabled downloadable features, including “Shrek’s Trivia Track,” the upcoming “World of Shrek” movie guide and “Donkey’s Digital Coloring Book,” where viewers can digitally paint their favorite scenes. Only the DVD features “Worcestershire Academy Yearbook,” an interactive flipbook with 30 soundbytes. Both the HD DVD and DVD will include “Shrek’s Guide to Parenthood,” with the ‘Shrek the Third’ three “Shrek” films can be mixed to music. DVD-ROM games include “Shrek Shmash-Ups” and several “Royal Tournament Games.” Pulling in a giant $785 million in theaters worldwide, Paramount and DreamWorks are making sure the film’s second life on video is worthy, with the “largest, most comprehensive marketing program ever launched” by them, according to the two companies. For three months, starting in October and capitalizing on Halloween, the two studios have joined with 15 promotional partners, including Energizer, Campbell’s, Kellogg’s and McDonalds. Also, every Shrek the Third DVD will include a game piece, where five grandprize winners will receive an “HP Digital Home Makeover” worth $3,500. Other prices include notebook PCs, Xbox 360 game consoles, HD DVD players, LG Mint Chocolate phones, and photo gifts from Snapfish. Lastly, viewers of the Macy’s Thanksgiving characters Gingy, Donkey, Puss in Boots and turette “Tech of Shrek”; a “Donkey Dance” Day Parade will be in for a green treat: Shrek Pinocchio offering tips on parenting to video; a gag reel; and several DreamWorks the ogre will make his debut in front of 50 Shrek and Fiona; deleted scenes; a behind- Kids creative bonus features, including million on TV and 3.5 million watching live the-scenes featurette with the cast; the fea- “Shrek Shmash-Ups,” where scenes from all as he floats down New York streets. ‘RUSH HOUR 3’ MARKS NEW LINE’S NEXT HIGH-DEF TITLE ON BOTH FORMATS By Chris Tribbey P R O D U C T Less than two weeks after officially joining the high-def game with Hairspray, New Line Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, as well as DVD, offerings for Rush Hour 3. The franchise comedy with Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan will street on DVD and Bluray the day after Christmas, with the HD DVD expected in the first quarter of 2008. The two-disc DVD Platinum Series edition ($34.99), the Blu-ray and HD DVD ($39.98) will feature a production diary, a director’s commentary from Brett Ratner, a gag reel, trailers and deleted scenes. A single-disc standard DVD will be available for $28.98. Matt Lasorsa, New Line’s EVP of marketing, explained that HD DVD is not going day-and-date with the Blu-ray and DVD offerings “simply due to our relationship with international distributors.” Because there is no region coding on HD DVD, “we have to be sensitive because we sell our theatrical rights worldwide,” he said.
