Users can download a free, 30-day trial offer of the software or purchase it directly. – Chris Tribbey www.homemediamagazine.com Report: Cable Revenue to Top $121B by 2017 By Erik Gruenwedel ew forms of entertainment distribution are expected to help the cable industry increase revenue 77% to $121 billion by 2017, from $68.6 billion in 2006, according to a new report. SNL Kagan, a New York-based research company, said in its 10-year forecast that monthly revenue per subscriber is expected to increase 64%, to $143, in the same period. Commercial services and assorted incremental revenue will push sales to $109 million in 2011 and $138 million in 2017. Revenue from those segments generated $72 million last year. Such services include video-on-demand, pay-per-view movies and prime-time TV programming, time-shifting content via digital video recording (DVR), high-def options and interactive menus. “The cable industry’s growth prospects are going to depend on selling CONNECTED CONSOLES TO TOP 37M UNITS By Erik Gruenwedel he installed base of connected game consoles — including Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii — will top 37 million units in North America in 2008, a new report projects. The research, presented by IDC and IDG Entertainment, said online video gaming, including subscription services such as Xbox Live, represented the fastest growing segment of the market. Online console sales this year will triple to $583 million from 2006, the report found. Downloadable content revenue will increase more than 1,000% from 2006 to 2007, and subscription sales, 158%. The report noted that traditional video game software sales still dominate, with $9.5 billion in sales projected this year. Still, online content represents the most exciting growth in the industry, the report found. “Consumers are increasingly purchasing games by non-traditional means such as downloads or subscriptions,” said Billy Pidgeon, program manager for games research with IDC. Separately, Rentrak Corp. released a mid-year 2007 report card. The number of cable on-demand orders tracked grew to 1.44 billion, up 44% from the same time last year. Rentrak reported comparable mid-year on-demand programming orders increased 103% in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. The company said it is on pace to double the 2.6 million on-demand orders it tracked last year. More than 50 “Looney Tunes” episodes, including many in high-definition, are available for download to own, and one episode is available for free. Ten of the episodes will be available in Spanish as well. “We are particularly proud to offer programming in Spanish as well as high-definition, both of which help enhance the appeal of these great shows for Xbox 360 owners,” I MOVIELINK OFFERS ‘SOPRANOS’ GRATIS Four episodes of “The Sopranos,” including the first three episodes of season one and one episode from season six, are now available for free on Movielink.
