Arnold ndependent DVD supplier Shout! Factory, known for its eclectic music, TV and cult movie offerings, is launching a new digital media division, GetBack Media. The venture aims to become the ultimate pop culture destination for online users 30 years old and up. Original digital content and the launch of a Web community site are in the cards for next year. “For years we’ve been discussing and planning how to take our pop culture passion and sensibility and transfer it to the Internet,” said Shout! Factory co-founder Richard Foos. “GetBack Media is a natural extension of what we’ve done with physical goods in celebrating great entertainment and turning on collectors as well as casual fans to great music, TV and movies.” Chris Dominguez, a former MTV Networks Entertainment Group executive, has been named president of the new division. Other executive appointments include media consultant FitzJohn I J. Flynn, VP of business development; former Shout! Factory VP of A&R Shawn Amos, VP of content; and another MTV veteran, Sean Endler, VP of product. Dominguez comes to the new venture with a rich background in digital media. He was SVP of business development at MTV Networks Entertainment Group, specializing in digital video initiatives for Ifilm. He also was a member of the senior management team at Ifilm Corp., which completed the $49 million acquisition by MTV parent Viacom Inc. in October 2005. “Our investors and founders have been instrumental in surfacing amazing, but forgotten, media assets for physical distribution, initially through Rhino Records, which they built, grew and eventually sold to the Warner Music Group and now at Shout! Factory,” Dominguez said. “GetBack Media was created to reincarnate the same sensibility for today’s more fluid digital world, while furthering the relationship with our pop-culture fans. “GetBack Media is creating an immersive and personal retro media experience by combining deep catalog media assets with the power of online social networking.” I IMEEM, EMI INK DEAL Social networking site Imeem and EMI Music have partnered to allow Imeem to stream music and video content from EMI’s roster of artists. – Billy Gil HULU.COM DEBUTS WITH CONTENT DEALS, FINANCING SUPPORT By Erik Gruenwedel BC Universal and News Corp. launched a private beta edition of video distribution site Hulu.com. Programming includes episodes of “24,” “30 Rock,” “Arrested Development,” “Bionic Woman,” “Bones,” “House,” “Heroes,” “The Office” and “The Simpsons,” and movies The Blues Brothers, The Jerk, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and others. The site received $100 million in funding from Providence Equity Partners, which specializes in entertainment ventures. Some have suggested the site has been earmarked as competition to YouTube. “It’s up in the air how much [user-generated content] we’ll have,” Jon Cody, acting GM for the venture, said at the Digital Hollywood Conference in Santa Monica, Calif. “But we look at it as a genre, a class of content that can live side-by-side with our professionally produced content.” In their announcement, NBC Universal and News Corp. said users “can embed videos throughout the Web, including their own” to expand Hulu’s distribution capabilities.
