He has sold more than 13 million records. Included in that bunch are successful faith-based and traditional hymn albums – Inspirational Journey, Rise and Shine, Worship & Faith and Glory Train. In 2003, Travis was awarded the Christian Country Music Association’s Mainstream Country Artist of the Year award, while Rise and Shine won a Dove Award for Country Album of the Year. The popular song “Three Wooden Crosses” from that album is the only song from a Christian music label ever to make it to the No. 1 spot on the country music charts. Travis enjoys 22 No. 1 hits on the country charts, six No. 1 albums, five Grammy awards, six Country Music Association awards, 10 American Music Association awards, six Dove Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As an actor for 20 years, Travis has appeared on such television series as “Touched by an Angel” and “Matlock,” while his films include The Rainmaker, Frank & Jessie and Texas Rangers. Now Travis and Lib are partners in Outreach Cinema, a direct-to-church DVD release program from Pure Flix Entertainment (see accompanying story). The company will bring faith-based films directly to churches for old-fashioned congregation screenings, making it easy for the churches to gain access to the films and accompanying educational materials. “Randy’s great,” says David A.R. White, an actor, producer and fellow partner in Outreach Cinema. “He’s just a great human being, and the part in this film is perfect for him. It’s a movie in many ways about celebrity, and of course Randy knows celebrity. He’s a pro who shows up early and knows all his lines.” White tells of an incident on the set of The Wager in which Travis pulled a punch in a fight scene and ended up breaking his hand. “He worked another six hours without saying anything about it,” White says. “We found out the next day. If not specifically faith-based, many contain strong moral messages, even if some of those are subtly placed. “I grew up a fan of the Western, so I enjoy John Wayne and Roy Rogers movies,” Travis says. “There are wonderful moral messages within those films, like there are in so many of those Westerns. When I was a kid it was all about the action in the Westerns, but in time I began to see the bigger picture, how so many of those stories are about making important choices in our lives.” Roy Rogers (L) and John Wayne (R) 10 CHRISTIAN ENTERTAINMENT REVIEW / NOVEMBER 2007 http://randytravis.com/film
