Home Media Magazine - November 11-17, 2007 - (Page CER16) REBELLION OF THOUGHT >> Street 11/13, Exploration Films, Documentary, $22.95 DVD, NR. I THE SANTA CLAUSE 3: THE ESCAPE CLAUSE >> Street 11/20, Disney, Comedy, B.O. $84.5 million, $29.99 DVD, $34.99 Blu-ray, ‘G’. Stars Tim Allen, Martin Short, Elizabeth Mitchell, Eric Lloyd. T his is the third “Santa Clause” movie, and the formula still works well. Scott Calvin, aka Kris Kringle (Allen), is tricked by Jack Frost (Short), who takes his Santa powers away. Scott knows in his heart of hearts he is the genuine Kris Kringle, and he is determined to find a way to reclaim his place at the North Pole. This film is made in the image of the Disney films of old — entertaining and heartwarming. Everyone at the North Pole, except Jack Frost, desires to submit to their leader, Kris, and there is a real warmth and respect among the characters who both work and live together. They obviously enjoy what they do and each other’s company. There are some touching scenes in the movie, including one where young Lucy (played charmingly by Liliana Mumy) hugs Jack Frost, and the warmth of her love causes his icy shell to melt. There is some reindeer flatulence in the movie, and the reindeer respond like young kids would, laughing and giggling about it. A young JOHN 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. girl gives Santa a kick when she feels he is being insensitive to the pregnant and crying Mrs. Clause in one scene, but other than Kris and Jack Frost having a struggle, there is little in the scuffling department. I saw this film with my wife and son, and we were laughing about it a few days later and still talking about how good and funny it is. In what other film would you see a sign that says “378 Years Without an Accident” hanging in a workshop? This is one you can feel safe about seeing with the entire family. It not only is wholesome, but also entertaining. Though no overt Christian message is included, the love is there, as well as the idea that the truth will set you free. – Rev. Edwin L. Carpenter Christian rating: Entertainment rating: #### f you are looking for a documentary that will stimulate serious discussion among thoughtful adult Christians, look no further. Rebellion of Thought is it. The strength of this documentary is that it gives viewers a good understanding of post-modernism. This is the thinking that marks our nation’s universities and a majority of today’s younger generations, and it is essential that people of the church comprehend its parameters. A conversation between the brothers Williamson, filmmakers Brad and Kent, is the glue that holds the narrative together. They are convinced that the church in America is increasingly irrelevant and that’s why so many people are dropping out. They call for an ecclesial revolution similar to the one Martin Luther initiated in the 1500s. We found ourselves agreeing with much of what the Williamsons stated, but felt they were long on emphasizing that a problem existed without proposing specifics as to what exactly needed to be changed and how. Certainly, their comments are what give an otherwise talking-head discussion a needed jolt of adrenaline. A lively discussion among those who view Rebellion of Thought will achieve what the filmmakers are attempting. Do you agree or disagree? How is the church failing to engage the post-modern culture? What can or should it do? Who is creating successful models? – Dr. David and Karen Mains Christian rating: Entertainment rating: #### ROMANS 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind … CHRISTIAN RATING 5 Couldn’t be closer to biblical Christian family values/messages than the Bible 4 Strong biblical Christian family values/messages throughout the movie 3 Good mix of Christian family values 2 Christian values are there, but not obvious 1 Christian values, if any, are hidden and hard to find ENTERTAINMENT RATING 5 # Potential Academy award winner, great entertainment 4 # Great production values, well-acted, good entertainment 3 # Contains several memorable scenes that make it worth watching 2 # Enjoyed watching, but not a must-see 1 # OK, but the type of film you watch and forget 16 CHRISTIAN ENTERTAINMENT REVIEW / NOVEMBER 2007
