The High-Def Disc Awards dinner was part of HighDef 2.0, a one-day conference held Dec. 4 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Century City, Calif. High-Def 2.0 was presented by Home Media Magazine in cooperation with The Hollywood Reporter and the Entertainment Merchants Association. A panel of critics and bloggers determined the best titles in 11 categories, with eligibility dating back to the inception of each high-def format — HD DVD in April 2006 and Blu-ray Disc in June 2006. Tom Adams of Adams Media Research spoke about the transition from DVD to high-def disc. To demonstrate Home Media Magazine objectivity in the high-def format war, Home Media Magazine’s Thomas K. Arnold poked fun at the format war by wearing Army fatigues and said: “Home Media Magazine is not blue or red … we’re purple.” 1 Henkel of DVD Review and Bill Hunt of The Digital Bits on the blogger panel. Home Media Magazine’s Erik Gruenwedel (standing) moderated an audio/music panel with (L-R): Sam Erickson of 44 Pictures, Adam Sosinsky of Sony BMG, Dave Bales of Pioneer Electronics and composer Michael Ciacchino. Home Media Magazine’s Stephanie Prange (back) moderated the well-attended studio panel with (L-R): Simon Swart of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Lori Machperson of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, Don Eklund of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Miguel Casillas of Lionsgate. moderated the consumer electronics panel with (L-R): Eisuke Tsuyuzaki of Panasonic, Andy Parsons of Pioneer and Chris Buma of Philips Electronics. T. Kent Dahn of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment (center) accepted the awards for Best Picture Quality (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest) and Best Animated (Ratatouille).
