The $26.95 two-DVD set streets Dec. 18 from Docurama and chronicles the 2006 conference (see review, page 14). Zuniga said she first heard of TED while being interviewed on an unrelated topic. As Zuniga learned more about the conference, she hit upon the idea of crafting a documentary to show it to the rest of the world. “I wanted many more people to see these ideas and these speeches,” she said. “I had an idea to offer an alternate perspective to what we usually get, which is bad news inundated by celebrity nonsense. Life is not all bad news. People are the opposite of bad news.” Attendance is by invitation only and limited to 1,000 guests. Participation in 2006 cost $4,400 per person (it has since increased to $6,000). Past speeches, known as TED Talks, are available at TED. com. The film is not officially associated with TED, although the conference was very cooperative in giving access to Zuniga’s team. Funding was raised independently, with significant contributions from companies such as Netflix. The film has been available exclusively through Netflix since June. Having limited directorial experience, Zuniga joined with documentarian Steven Latham to take on the task of filming the conference. “Having a great partner when you’re a beginner is crucial, and that’s what Steven was,” Zuniga said. “We put together a great team, and they really helped achieve the vision that was in my head.” Zuniga decided it would be more beneficial to document just 2006, rather than explore the impact TED has had since its inception. “That was the year the conference was really about taking on massive problems in the world, to introduce other years would have created a different flavor,” Zuniga said. “I wanted to show a community coming together to take on these challenges. It’s about seeing a cross section and being moved by a lot of different problems and cases and solutions. M TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and since 1984, the annual four-day event in Monterey, Calif., has brought together the top minds from these three fields.
