Forty years ago this summer, Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in rural Bethel, N.Y., was the site of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. From Aug. 15-18, 1969, a half-million people braved rainy skies and gridlock traffic to attend this historic event, which featured performances by 32 celebrated artists, including Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Who, Santana, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Woodstock’s cultural legacy as both the defining moment of 1960s pop culture and a coda of sorts to the era’s idealism were celebrated in the 1970 Oscar-winning documentary Woodstock, which on June 9 will be released by Warner Home Video in a lavish new 40th anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition. Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music, available on DVD, features the director’s cut, with a run time of more than four hours. In addition, the Ultimate Collector’s Edition DVD and Blu-ray Disc contains two extra hours of rare performance footage, some newly discovered, some only seen in part and some never seen in all. “It’s an amazing package,” says Jeff Baker, the Warner EVP who is overseeing the film’s release. “To everyone who grew up in the 1960s, it’s a trip down memory lane.
