Study Supports Consumer Interest in Packaged Media By Erik Gruenwedel RESEARCH Global online video revenue, including online packaged DVD rental, is projected to top $4.5 billion by 2012, up 275% from $1.2 billion this year, according to a new report. In-Stat, a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based media research company, said online DVD rental pioneer Netflix’s hybrid packaged media/streaming business model would lead online video growth in the near term, followed by ad-supported new and repurposed content from television networks. The report said 90% of U.S. households would be broadbandenabled by 2012, with 94% of those households watching online video. Indeed, the report found that 39% of adult respondents intend to purchase or rent DVDs via the Internet by 2012, while more than 54% said they prefer packaged media when buying movies or TV shows. In-Stat analyst Gerry Kaufhold said younger respondents who regularly view entertainment online nonetheless favored owning packaged media due to the format’s associated artwork and extra content, such as special features. “That bodes well for Blu-ray,” Kaufhold said. PROJECTIONS Tuning in to TV By Kelly Burner MERCHANDISING It could be all about the boob tube on the release slate for Aug. 12. Aside from a handful of theatrical releases with revenue of less than $1 million, the only significant box office performer of the week is Disney/Miramax’s Smart People. The comedy brought in $9.5 million in theaters and is loaded with stars, including Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City) and Ellen Page (Juno). Facing little competition and packed with star power, Smart People is likely to surpass Nim’s Island as the top-rented DVD in the nation. Also released Aug. 12 were three complete-season boxed sets: season eleven of Comedy Central’s “South Park,” season three of Fox’s hit series “Prison Break” and season five of the HBO crime drama “The Wire.” “Prison Break” in particular is timed for release just before the new season begins, so consumers may want to purchase the set to catch up on what they missed. “South Park” and “The Wire” also are getting a nice retail push that could put them onto the top-sellers chart. As for Blu-ray, both Smart People and Prison Break: Season Three are sure to be a hit. However, it’s unlikely that either will topple Batman Begins as the best-selling Blu-ray Disc. Look for Smart People to debut at No. 2 on the Blu-ray chart, just behind Batman Begins. A Wal-Mart in Long Beach, Calif., and a Circuit City in Seal Beach, Calif., didn’t even bother to put any of the new-release titles on shelves. While this may have been an oversight of the clerks (Circuit City advertised an exclusive magnet set with purchase of the new “South Park” DVD), it didn’t stop some tie-in displays for other properties. Wal-Mart, for instance, offered DVDs of all the “Star Wars” movies for $13, anticipating the theatrical release of The Clone Wars. Of note, Circuit City’s circular flyer for the week also did not advertise a single Blu-ray Disc. Target offered most of the new releases on DVD, but it seems the chain is playing catchup when it comes to offering the Blu-ray alternative on street date. Target did have a “buy two, get one free” offer on select BD titles. August 17–23, 2008 Home Media Magazine 9 http://www.homemediamagazine.com http://Amazon.com
