The awards honor the best TV DVDs released between Oct. 1, 2007, and Sept. 30, 2008, in a variety of categories. Categories this year include: Best 2000s Series, Best 1990s Series, Best 1970s/1980s Series, Best 1960s/1950s Series, Best Animation TV DVD, Best Kidvid TV DVD, Best Reality Show, Best Documentary Series, Best Miniseries/Made-for-TV Movie, Best H Fifth Annual AWARDS DVD BRINGING DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT TO YOU International TV DVD, Best Bonus Materials, Best TV on Blu-ray and Best CompleteSeries Set. The awards will be selected by a consumer vote to be held from Sept. 22 to Oct. 3 at HomeMediaMagazine. com and TVShowsOnDVD.com. DIGITAL DIVIDE By Erik Gruenwedel n the drive toward electronic distribution, leave it to oldschool packaged media to lend a helping — or perhaps more accurately, competing — hand. Studios are not so quietly ramping up efforts to include a digital copy with new and catalog titles on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The electronic edition typically downloads to a PC or Mac and can be transferred to a laptop or portable media player, including an iPod, iPhone and Sony’s PlayStation Portable, depending on digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. Piggybacking digital copy with DVD and Blu-ray allows studios to continue mining the lucrative packaged-media market while establishing a foothold in electronic distribution and countering piracy. Arnold he Blu-ray Disc juggernaut continues, with Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announcing it will release five more Platinum Collection animated classics on Blu-ray Disc. The quintet includes Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which opened in theaters in 1937 and is the first of Disney’s acclaimed, hand-drawn animated features. Employees contacted locally lamented that the company appeared to be transitioning shelf-space away from music to better-selling DVD movies at a snail’s pace.
