Arnold aramount Home Entertainment’s Cloverfield opened with a bang on video, much as it did in theaters. The sci-fi actioner, which generated 58% of its total box office receipts its opening weekend, topped both the national DVD sales and rental charts its first week in stores. The film, which topped out just north of $80 million in U.S. theaters, coasted to an easy victory on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, bumping the previous week’s top seller, 20th Century Fox’s Juno, to No. 2. Another new release, Universal Studios’ Charlie Wilson’s War, debuted at No. 3, followed at No. 4 by 20th Century Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks, still a strong seller its fourth week in stores. Also bowing in the First Alert top 10, at No. 7, P was Warner’s One Missed Call. The remake of the Japanese horror film Chakushin Ari pulled in $26.9 million theatrically — and came to video with fiendishly frightening cover art depicting a mask with screaming mouths as eyes. In rental stores, Cloverfield generated an estimated $7.5 million, according to Home Media Magazine market research. The previous week’s top renter, Juno, held strong its second week in stores, earning an additional $6.9 million to snag the No. 2 spot on the magazine’s weekly rental chart. Charlie Wilson’s War debuted at No. 3, with $6.7 million in rental revenue, while One Missed Call bowed at No. 7 with $4.7 million. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, from 20th Century Fox, was again the top Blu-ray Disc seller for the week, followed by Juno.
