Also, for the first year, the awards will recognize the best TV releases on Blu-ray Disc. The winners, based on a consumer vote, will be announced Oct. 14 during a gala dinner and cocktail reception at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, Calif. The awards are presented by N Home Media Magazine in cooperation with DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group and the Entertainment Merchants Association. The native DRM in the SD cards allows the studios to feel See TOSHIBA, Page 48 Blu-ray Replicators Ready for Q4 T By Chris Tribbey arlier this year, more than one home entertainment analyst voiced concerns regarding Blu-ray Disc replication capacity for the fourth quarter, with all the major studios and more independents adding their titles. The collective voice from the Blu-ray Disc replication community: stop worrying. The three major Blu-ray replicators — Sony DADC, Technicolor and Cinram — all have added capacity, and new medium-sized replicators have popped up, promising they can handle the anticipated fourth-quarter load of movies and video games. Leading the way, not surprisingly, is Sony DADC. Adding nearly 100 new jobs, and pumping more than $100 million into E expanding its Terre Haute, Ind., Blu-ray facility, Sony DADC is now producing more than 45 million Blu-ray Discs a month. Toshiba and NCR will invest $35 million in MOD to develop self-service digital delivery devices whereby consumers can download digital content to Secure Digital (SD) cards and portable devices. Toshiba said it will develop highcapacity SD cards, as well as a dedicated set-top box for the home. Circuit City CEO Quits Retailer Wattles’ man James Marcum named acting chief executive By Erik Gruenwedel RETAIL Beleaguered CEO Philip Schoonover has quit troubled consumer electronics retailer Circuit City, effective immediately. James Marcum, who was named to the Richmond, Va.based retailer’s board in June as part of a settlement deal with dissident shareholder Mark Wattles, was named Schoonover acting president and CEO.
