Home Media Magazine - October 19-25, 2008 - (Page 10) REVIEWS Edited by John Latchem www.homemediamagazine.com also known as the 666, have regrouped under the watchful, scary eye of Billy Wings (Vinnie Jones) and Deuce (Carradine), who are hell bent on retrieving some long-lost drug money. With style that’s straight out of the Planet Terror playbook, this trippy flick is very Tarantinoesque, meaning it’s not for sensitive ears or the faint of heart. In other words, expect a lot of nudity, knives and gasoline. Also expect Madsen, a Tarantino mainstay, as The Gent, one of Pistolero’s partners-in-crime. The film clocks in at less than 90 minutes, but the DVD is still chock-full of special features, including the obligatory making-of featurette and commentary. However, other extras are neatly divided into “The Babes of Hell Ride” “The Guys of Hell Ride,” and even “The Choppers of Hell Ride” — in case your head was ready to explode from the orgies, arrows and other endless action. Just make sure to check out “Michael Madsen’s Video Diary,” a shaky-cam tour that looks partially like a cheesy music video, but show’s the actor’s less-monotonous side. – Rachel Cericola I HELL RIDE Street 10/28 Genius/Weinstein, Action, B.O. $0.2 million, $19.97 DVD, $29.95 Blu-ray, ‘R’ for strong violence, sexual content including graphic nudity and dialogue, language and drug use. Stars Dennis Hopper, Michael Madsen, Vinnie Jones, Larry Bishop, Julia Jones, Eric Balfour, David Carradine. L arry Bishop’s bit cameo in Kill Bill Vol. 2 and his famous bloodline (he’s Rat Packer Joey Bishop’s son) must have impressed director Quentin Tarantino. The cult favorite stands behind this homage to classic biker flicks and hot chicks as one of its executive producers. Of course, that’s just one of the many big names in the credits for the non-stop Hell Ride. Despite the huge cast, writer-director Bishop put himself in the lead as Pistolero, a biker out for revenge on those who killed his lover, Cherokee Kisum (Julia Jones). However, the hunter and his crew are also the hunted. See, the killers in question, BLU-RAY SPOTLIGHT I SPEED RACER Warner, Action, B.O. $43.9 million, $28.98 DVD, $35.99 Blu-ray, ‘PG’ for sequences of action, some violence and language. Stars Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox. I TRAILER PARK OF TERROR Street 10/21 Summit, Horror, $22.99 DVD, ‘R’ for strong sadistic horror, violence and torture/sexual content, pervasive A nyone who has a Blu-ray Disc player will want to purchase Speed Racer, despite the fact the story gets a flat tire whenever it veers away from the on-track action. It’s the visuals that impress with this movie. The Wachowski Brothers have crafted a candy-colored thrill ride that pops out of your HDTV screen. Since this film has been released on a BD-25 disc, that perfect 1080p transfer from the digital master comes at a price. There was no room for Warner Bros. to provide lossless audio or TrueHD surround sound. This disc gets the identical Dolby 5.1 surround sound the DVD version has. Audiophiles and many home theater purists will likely be upset at this. That said, the movie sounds great. It just doesn’t have the same flawless impact that HD sound would have provided. Although this is a three-disc set, the other two discs are normal DVDs. One offers a standard-definition digital download of the movie. The other has the DVD game Speed Racer: Crucible Challenge, which might entertain kids for a short while. In total, there’s only about an hour’s worth of bonus content, although online reports have said extensive bonus materials exist. This points to a future release of the film on BD with HD sound and better extras. The only exclusive bonus content on BD, besides the aforementioned game, is the featurette “Speed Racer: Car Fu Cinema,” an interesting exploration of the film’s extensive use of CGI. The two featurettes from the DVD release also are included, although neither are in HD. “Spritle in the Big Leagues,” which is clearly aimed at kids, features actor Paulie Litt guiding a tour of the set. More entertaining is Speed Racer: Supercharged! — a faux documentary on the World Racing League. – John Gaudiosi language and drug use. Stars Nichole Hiltz, Hayley Marie Notman, Trace Adkins, Ryan Carnes. railer Park of Terror brings to life the macabre, off-thewall Imperium Comics series of the same name. Filled with “Hellraiser”-esque villains; “Saw”like scenes of torture, including some of the most grotesque special effects I’ve ever seen; and a powerful Southern-rock soundtrack, Trailer Park really pushes the horror-genre envelope. The story unfolds as six very troubled teenagers and their chaperon, Pastor Lewis (Matthew Del Negro of “The Sopranos”), find themselves stranded in the middle of Trucker’s Triangle — where people have been disappearing for the past 20 years — after their bus crashes on the way back from a ministry retreat. Stuck in a violent storm, the motley crew decides to take shelter in what appears to be an abandoned trailer park. Once they enter, the outsiders will be tempted with sex, drugs and any other vice that will lure them into the grasps of the evil redneck zombies, who have fun torturing and killing their victims. Trailer Park marks the horror debut of director Steven Goldmann, better known for his work in country music videos. The film made a big splash at the 2008 Slamdance Film Festival and is easily one of the best horror films released this year. Its street date also nicely coincides well with the theatrical release of Saw V. The filmmakers of Trailer Park assembled a top-notch cast, including a great cameo by country star Trace Adkins as the devil, and did a phenomenal job crafting an original screenplay from the popular comic book series. The DVD includes both ‘R’-rated and unrated versions of the film, as well as a featurette with interviews of the trailer park zombies. Overall, the film is both grisly and entertaining, making it a perfect Halloween treat for the true hardcore horror fan. – Matt Miller T 10 Home Media Magazine October 19–25, 2008 http://www.homemediamagazine.com
