Notwithstanding dour packaged-media sales reported last week by The Walt Disney Co., standard-DVD units still comprise 97.1% of the market. Indeed, Time Warner reported an $18 million increase in quarterly operating income for its filmed-entertainment business, which includes Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group. BRIEFS I ‘DEXTER’ MAKES A KILLING AGAIN IN HD Season two of Showtime’s hit series “Dexter” arrives on Blu-ray Disc May 5 from CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment. Dexter: The Complete Second Season (three-disc set $57.99) includes all 12 episodes of the show about a unique kind of serial killer, played by Emmy nominee Michael C. Hall (“Six Feet Under”). BD Live capabilities provide special bonus features, including the featurette “Blood Fountains,” the “Dark Defender” series, podcasts, and the first two episodes of Showtime series “Nurse Jackie” and “United States of Tara.” – Kyra Kudick The Monterey, Calif.-based research firm said Blu-ray Disc will attain nearly 60% market share in 2014 and generate $13.1 billion in revenue. SNL also said BD market share would soar to 73.8%, or $15.6 billion in revenue by 2017. Concurrently, sales of Blu-ray players are expected to grow from $255.4 million in 2008 to $1.3 billion in 2010, reaching mass-market penetration and spiking to nearly $6.9 billion by 2013. “Blu-ray will be the driving force behind the video retail market throughout the next decade,” said Wade Holden, analyst at SNL Kagan. “The current economic climate, however, will slow the growth of this new format and likely keep it from reaching the heights that it may have [reached] in better times.” Holden said BD’s dominance in home video could be short-lived, as VOD is poised to become a major force in home entertainment after 2017. Kagan estimates there will be 98.8 million highspeed Internet homes capable of delivering VOD in 2017, versus 115.2 million high-def homes. “VOD services will continue to improve in both technology and content over the next decade and begin to draw consumers away from Blu-ray and DVD by 2017,” he said. FOX MUTATES ‘X-MEN’ FOR BLU-RAY By John Latchem House Passes Digital TV Delay By Chris Tribbey n a second vote, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation to approve delaying the nationwide digital transition from Feb. 17 to June 12, giving millions of American homes extra time to prepare for the analog switch-off, but potentially costing millions of dollars. President Obama, who had previously voiced support for the bill, is expected to sign it. The idea of a delay first came in early January, when the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced it had run through the $1.34 billion Congress gave it to administer a $40 consumer coupon program for digital converter boxes. Analog televisions still receiving broadcasts I n anticipation of the May 1 theatrical release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment April 21 (prebook March 25) will bow specialedition Blu-ray Disc versions of the three previous “X-Men” films. X-Men (2000), X2: XMen United (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) will be offered as three-disc BD versions at $34.99 each or as a boxed set for $79.99. Last Stand is already available as a singledisc Blu-ray. The three films, based on the popular Marvel Comics franchise, generated more than $1.16 billion at the worldwide box office, with the original film often credited for sparking the current trend of superhero films. Among the bonus material, the discs will include BD Live access to exclusive footage from Wolverine and allow fans to purchase tickets. Other extras include commentaries, deleted scenes, trailers, Easter eggs and a slew of behind-the-scenes material. Only select extras are offered in high-def, however, and the Blu-ray trilogy offers 5.1 DTS master audio. The third disc for each film includes a digital copy. The boxed set also will include movie cash coupons for upcoming Fox films Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Night at the Museum: Escape From the Smithsonian. O via antennas need one of the boxes when analog broadcasts are cut off, and can cost as much as $80. Since the NTIA announcement, more than 3 million people have joined a waiting list for the coupons. The Senate passed the bill in late January. The Nielsen Co. estimates as many as 6.5 million homes are currently unprepared for the switch. Some businesses, including Verizon Communications and AT&T, had come out in support of a delay, while the Consumer Electronics Association had urged Congress to move forward with the current transition date. Also Feb. 4 the NTIA appointed a new administrator, Anna Gomez, to focus on the digital television (DTV) transition. PANASONIC CUTS JOBS, PROJECTS $4B FISCAL-YEAR LOSS By Chris Tribbey P anasonic will cut about 15,000 jobs worldwide, after announcing it was projecting a loss of more than $4 billion for its fiscal year ending March 31. Half of the jobs would be cut in Japan.
