Arnold all it shrewd marketing: A film about the shooting of a U.S. president is released to the home video market just before the Fourth of July, in a presidential election year, no less. The ploy worked: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Vantage Point coasted to an easy victory on all three home video charts the week ended July 6, even beating a pair of high-profile comedies to narrowly clinch the No. 1 spot on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart. Vantage Point, with a box office gross of $72.3 million, also was the week’s No. 1 rental and Blu-ray Disc seller its first week in stores. On the DVD sales front, the latest Tyler Perry C comedy, Meet the Browns, from Lionsgate, came in a close second, while another new comedy, Paramount’s Drillbit Taylor, debuted at No. 5, behind holdovers 10,000 B.C. and The Spiderwick Chronicles, the two top sellers the previous week. On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, Drillbit Taylor debuted at No. 2 with 77.8% as much rental action as Vantage Point. Meet the Browns debuted at No. 6, doing 50.5% the business of the week’s top renter. Drillbit generated $32.9 million at the box office, while Meet the Browns made $42 million. Vantage Point also replaced 10,000 B.C. as the top Blu-ray Disc seller of the week, with Drillbit debuting at No. 6 and Meet the Browns at No. 8.
