BY STEPHANIE PRANGE An unanticipated theme to this issue is longevity. We cover two franchises, one epic and one — well — a little smaller in scope, but just as big in ideas. As a child, one of my favorite book series was “The Chronicles of Narnia.” From the minute Lucy opened that magical wardrobe, I was hooked. I would rush to the library once I finished an installment to get the next in the series. A few years ago, I had the pleasure of introducing my own daughter to the series. We read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe together in anticipation of the movie version. As a young adult, I perused The Screwtape Letters, and my mother recently sent me C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity. In our feature story, writer Brendan Howard takes a walk through the scholarly writings and DVDs generated by the legacy of C.S. Lewis. But it is Lewis’ unique ability to talk to a child through his famous series, the second story of which will hit DVD with Prince Caspian this fall, that is perhaps why his work has survived the test of time. Another franchise that speaks to children in a unique way is “VeggieTales,” celebrating its 15th anniversary. It’s a testament to the creativity of Mike Nawrocki and Phil Vischer — who saw an unfulfilled need in Christian preschool programming — that these talking vegetables remain fresh today.
