Arnold he fast-paced actioner Max Payne, from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, overcame its modest box office performance to top all three home video charts its first week in stores. The video game-based film, which earned just $40.7 million in U.S. theaters late last year, debuted at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, Home Media Magazine’s rental chart and Nielsen’s Blu-ray Disc chart. Max Payne handily beat another I N DI E RE TA I L E R RE N TA L S Week ended January 25, 2009 RANK TITLE LABEL T new release with a higher box office pedigree, Lionsgate’s horror sequel Saw V, which debuted at No. 2 on the sales and rental charts and No. 4 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. Saw V grossed $56.7 million at the box office, but consumers bought just 81% as many copies as they did of Max Payne, according to Nielsen. The previous week’s top seller, Lionsgate’s The Family That Preys, from Tyler Perry, slipped to No. 6 on the sales chart. Blu-ray’s appeal, particularly among the action crowd, continues to heat up. The high-definition format accounted for 21% of the total buy on Max Payne, but just 11% of the total buy on Saw V. Meanwhile new Blu-ray Disc households are still snapping up copies of the format’s biggest seller to date, Warner’s The Dark Knight.
