Home Media Magazine - February 2, 2009 - (Page 7) The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations NEWS Solomon said he continues to be impressed by how the films perform on DVD. “They do fantastic on DVD, really better than I could have ever expected,” he said. The first “After Dark Horrorfest” DVD collection (released in March 2007) contained seven of the top 10 bestselling DTV horror titles for the year, and represented 28% of all DTV horror sales, said Chela Johnson, VP of marketing for Lionsgate, citing Nielsen data. She said the second DVD set (released March 2008) included five of the top 10 bestselling DTV horror titles for the year (two of those in the top five), and accounted for 13% of all DTV horror sales. This third DVD collection features The Broken, Slaughter, Perkins’ 14, The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations, From Within, Dying Breed, Autopsy and Voices. The titles are available separately at $19.98 each or in an eight-DVD boxed set for $159.98. All the DVDs include the popular YouTube “Miss Horrorfest Contest” webisodes, featuring the eight semifinalists living in a house and competing in a variety of contests for the crown. Slaughter, Perkins’ 14, and Dying Breed also include making-of bonus features, while Autopsy has an alternate ending and audio commentary. Solomon said fans can expect DVD bonus features to continue to expand as the festival matures. STUDIOS NAB TITLES AT SUNDANCE By Billy Gil Next ‘Horrorfest’ Set to Arrive in March By Kyra Kudick he third installment of “After Dark Horrorfest: 8 Films to Die For” makes its way to DVD March 31 (prebook March 4) from Lionsgate. The eight films in the set were shown theatrically nationwide during the third annual After Dark Horrorfest Jan. 9-15. After Dark Films president Courtney Solomon created the weeklong festival to showcase horror movies he describes as being “on the cusp,” not exactly big box-office earners, but not direct-to-video material either. A Perkins 14 T “This is a movie event for those who love horror — the die-hard fans,” Solomon said. And he promises those fans will be pleased with this year’s film selection. “I am light-years happier with the quality of the films this year,” Solomon said, admitting he thought the quality in the previous year “fell down a bit.” But Solomon seemed to take it in stride as part of the learning process and ongoing development of what he intends to make “the biggest film festival in the world.” lthough this year’s Sundance Film Festival occurred in a depressed economy, studios still managed to acquire critically acclaimed titles with some unique distribution deals. Perhaps the most notable among these was a deal Magnolia Pictures cut for the comedy Humpday. The studio reportedly paid $100,000 for the title and will first introduce the film through pay-per-view and premium cable channels before a small theatrical run and home video release, the Los Angeles Times reported. Magnolia previously has participated in the “superrelease” phenomenon whereby films are released theatrically, online (through Mark Cuban’s HDNet) and on DVD, which was used to release such films as Steven Soderbergh’s Bubble and Brian De Palma’s Redacted. Among the eight theatrical releases that grossed more than $1 million in domestic box offices were Sony Pictures’ Samuel Jackson vehicle Lakeview Terrace ($39.3 million); Fireproof, also from Sony Pictures ($33.5 million); and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, the newest film from Woody Allen ($23.1 million). Among the trio, Lakeview Terrace looks to be the most promising. Sporting the highest box office gross of the three titles and starring hot property Jackson, the title should be able to scare up consumers. Fireproof and Vicky Cristina should also make a significant impact on the weekly charts, but neither will likely sweep into second place. Fireproof, which stars Kirk Cameron and appeals to faith-based audiences, may have cashed in on its intended market already in theaters. On the other hand, Vicky Cristina Barcelona had a very limited theatrical release (at widest distribution, it was being shown in less than 750 theaters), and despite the Oscar buzz, Allen films often have limited and waning appeal. Expect Vicky Cristina to debut at No. 5 on the DVD rental and sales charts.
