Home Media Magazine - September 14-20, 2008 - (Page 24) REVIEWS I GEORGE BENSON: ABSOLUTELY LIVE Street 9/16 Eagle Rock/Kayos, Music, $14.98 DVD, NR. www.homemediamagazine.com S mooth as silk and dripping elegant soul, George Benson was ready to roll in this 2000 concert recorded in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The smooth jazz and pop stylist wows the packed audience with some of his own hits as well as standards, rearranging such nuggets as “I Only Have Eyes for You,” “Beyond the Sea,” “The Ghetto,” “In Your Eyes” and “Breezin’.” In this 105-minute concert, Benson shows off his legendary talent for jazz guitar with a sterling performance of “Deeper Than You Think,” and gets Irish eyes smiling with his take on the legendary “Danny Boy.” Benson saves some of his own hits for last, delivering inspired takes on the moody ballad “This Masquerade,” the jumping “Give Me the Night” and the modern pop classic “On Broadway.” Special guest appearances by Joe Sample, the BBC Big Band and musicians from Ireland’s Ulster Orchestra add to the festive and eclectic musical atmosphere. Extras include a behindthe-scenes documentary on the making of the live special, in which one of his studio musicians likens Benson to the “Michael Jordan of jazz guitar.” Benson reveals that he still practices guitar every day, not just because he needs to stay sharp, but also because he simply loves to play. He talks at length about how his love for music comes from a family background in Pittsburgh, where music appreciation was commonplace. Benson, who played for a time with Miles Davis, says he still finds himself fully in the moment when performing, and that each song conjures images of his own life experiences. Other extras include a photo gallery, biography and discography to help viewers follow Benson’s illustrious and ever-diverse career. – Dan Bennett I AMERICA’S GREATEST MONUMENTS: WASHINGTON, D.C. Street 9/23 Infinity, Documentary, $24.98 DVD, $34.98 Blu-ray, NR. W ashington, D.C., is home to 156 monuments and memorials that commemorate fallen soldiers, historical events, national heroes and international figures. This terrific hourlong program guides viewers through the origins of some of these iconic locations and what went into designing and building them. Obviously there’s not enough time to cover everything, but the show hits upon the major monuments and provides a good introduction to some of the newer ones. Recent additions to the Washington Mall include the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial and the World War II Memorial, both of which generated some controversy about their location and design elements. America’s Greatest Monuments also features some awesome bits of trivia about the legendary landmarks of our nation’s capital. For example, the stairwell of the Washington Monument is lined with dedication stones from various states and organizations, including a stone from the Vatican. But when the monument was being built in the 19th century, the original Pope stone was stolen by a group that opposed foreign influence on America. The Jefferson Memorial, built during WWII, originally featured a plaster statue painted to resemble bronze, which was on short supply because of the war effort. The current bronze statue was installed in 1947. Turning to one of the moreiconic shrines, the show traces how the Lincoln Memorial transformed from a symbol of national unity into a symbol of civil rights. This fascinating glimpse into Washington, D.C., also profiles the Iwo Jima Memorial, the Korean War Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. It’s essential viewing for history buffs, and also a handy guide for anyone preparing a trip to the capital. – John Latchem I SHOOTING HENRY HILL Street 9/23 Passion River, Documentary, $24.95 DVD, NR. S Q U I C K TA K E ‘Stains’ a Hit on DVD Y oung-Diane-Lane-in-tights fans, rejoice. Sept. 16 Rhino releases on DVD 1981’s Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains. The film follows three small-town misfit girls, filled with spirit if not actual talent, who start a punk band called The Stains, led by Lane as lead singer Corinne Burns. The film will appeal mostly to fans of Lane, her co-star Laura Dern and fans of early late ’70s/early ’80s girl punk bands such as The Runa- ways and The Slits. The acting is strong, and the film is full of enough quirky charm and genuine feeling that its easy to see why it has its cult following. And The Stains’ primal music is pretty good, if you like that sort of thing. Music fans also will enjoy appearances by Steve Jones, Paul Cook (both of The Sex Pistols), Paul Simonon (The Clash) and Fee Waybill (The Tubes). – Billy Gil hooting Henry Hill provides an unfortunate update on the real-life mobsterturned-stool-pigeon made famous in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas. When a film crew tracks Hill down in 2005, he is making $7 an hour as a cook in North Platte, Neb. Hill is frequently filmed drunk and disheveled, with subtitles provided to interpret words ravaged by booze, cigarettes and God knows what else. Though Hill says that he was “relieved” when entering the Federal Witness Protection Program in 1980, he still manages to find trouble. As filming continues he’s in the middle of an organized crime investigation. On top of that, he has a stormy relationship with his recovering addict wife, Kelly, who is divorced from Hill’s former driver and current co-worker, Dale. Even Hill’s manager is eager to take advantage of him. The interviews with Hill and his friends and family reveal a man who has blown his second chance at life, willfully surrounding himself with destructive people and indulging in the same behavior that nearly killed him. Shooting Henry Hill is essential viewing for one reason. It offers a sobering, depressing epilogue to the cinema’s glamorized version of organized crime. Extras include Hill talking about his family and his involvement in the Boston College point-shaving scandal and the Lufthansa heist. – Pete Croatto 24 Home Media Magazine September 14–20, 2008 http://www.homemediamagazine.com
