Even without a format war, the annual Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association event didn’t lose any of its luster, with nearly every major electronics manufacturer debuting new Blu-ray players, HDTVs and other home entertainment equipment. “Make no mistake: Sony is very serious about CEDIA,” said Ran2 dy Waynick, SVP of Sony’s home products division. The company best known for bringing streaming video to the Internet back in 1997 has developed a new technology for legally copying commercial DVDs to your PC and storing them for later viewing. The company touts the service, which leaves CSS encryption intact, as ideal for consumers who want more flexibility, less clutter and a lower risk of damage to their store-bought DVDs. Beginning Sept. 5, the company has slashed the price of its bare-bones Xbox 360 Arcade console, which does not include a hard disc drive, to $200 from $280.
