SEX & JUSTICE presents the dramatic confrontation between Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas at his Supreme Court confirmation hearings before the United States Senate in 1991. Not since the McCarthy hearings of the 1950s has the nation been so riveted with such political passion. Narrated by leading feminist writer Gloria Steinem, SEX & JUSTICE brings back the highlights of those explosive moments. However, fans of indie horror icon Shepis are in for a treat — a rich, gutsy performance that might even exceed the expectations of her most fervent followers. Together, the two have combined to make a challenging, draining and frightening film that is not for the weak of heart or mind. In a case of what might be called self-imposed tough love, Shepis’ Sarah travels to a remote convent in Italy where she seeks to wash away her sins by undergoing a rigorous, at times almost sadistic theological transformation into a nun, dedicating to depriving herself in order to fully serve the Lord. A young woman with a checkered past, Sarah shocks the Mother Superior when she reveals a tattoo that she refers to as a remnant of the life she wishes to leave behind. Aggressive removal of a full body of skin art might seem like a piece of cake compared to the extreme mental and physical torture Sarah undergoes, a series of four steps in which she must learn to “hear” the Lord, “see” the Lord, “touch” the Lord and “talk” with the Lord. This leads to a state of such psychological and spiritual anguish that she is susceptible to an invasion by the spirit of a young woman who lived on the same property and suffered similar abuse long before the location became a convent. Inventively produced but clearly shot on a modest budget, the claustrophobic mood and overall unpleasant tone of the film appropriately mirrors the plight of the protagonist, resulting in a piece that is consistently grim and uncomfortable to watch. – David Greenberg This astonishing exploration of the dark side of Christianity follows former priest James Carroll on a journey of remembrance and reckoning. Contact Us at 800-229-8575 or email sales@firstrunfeatures.com egendary German horror actor/director Ulli Lommel expands his serial killer filmography with the direct-tovideo release Son of Sam, about infamous New York madman David Berkowitz (played by Joshi, who bares an eerie resemblance to the real killer). The film takes place following Berkowitz’s arrest, as he recounts details of the murders and the satanic cult he claims drove him to kill. Unlike Spike Lee’s Summer of Sam, this low-budget crime thriller focuses on the killer and his descent into madness instead of the community and victims terrorized by Berkowitz during his yearlong killing spree in the late 1970s. This dramatized account, told through flashbacks, delves into the paranoidschizophrenic mind of Berkowitz as he aimlessly wanders the streets of New York listening to the voices in his head and from his neighbor’s dog that command him to kill those whose inner demons make themselves visible. Along the way, the film sheds light on the cult that allegedly indoctrinated Berkowitz into its satanic movement, turning him into a merciless, blood-hungry monster let loose on the city to carry out its dirty work. Following in the footsteps of recent big-screen serial killer films such as Zodiac and The Black Dahlia, horror master Lommel puts his unique spin on Son of Sam to craft an intriguing, diabolical thriller. Relying on newcomer Joshi in his first lead role, along with a quirky supporting cast including Gunter Ziegler, who is featured in the recent theatrical release Get Smart, the film takes on an arthouse feel without all the blood and gore. Audiences are drawn to films based on the stories of real-life serial killers, especially when they offer a fresh perspective on a wellknown story, which is what helps Son of Sam stand out from its predecessors. – Matt Miller 16 Home Media Magazine September 7–13, 2008 http://www.homemediamagazine.com
