By Billy Gil Can YouTube Home Media Expands Its Conferences By Billy Gil n expanded Home Entertainment Summit, with participation from key retailers, and an all-new horror DVD/Blu-ray Disc awards decided by consumer voting are among the highlights of Home Media Magazine’s 2009 conference schedule. “Our studio partners have made it clear they would rather have one big event than a handful of little ones,” said Thomas K. Arnold, publisher and editorial director of Home Media Magazine and executive producer of the Home Media Conferences program. “So we have expanded the summit, cut back on everything else, and introduced a new consumer component to our calendar.” The 2009 Home Entertainment Summit, produced in partnership See CONFERENCES, Page 22 A hile some may fear YouTube and other free streaming outlets to be the kiss of death for DVD and Blu-ray Disc, others are using the Web site to air their content — and seeing their disc sales rise as a result. Independent filmmaker Hunter Weeks released his first THE BIG PICTURE film, 10 MPH, on DVD independently the summer of 2007. He quickly saw DVD sales diminish as summer changed to fall. But, as reported in Forbes magazine, Weeks in January 2008 put his film on YouTube, the first feature-length documentary to screen on the site. The doc features one of Weeks’ producing partners, Josh Caldwell, traveling from Seattle to Boston on a Segway. Blockbuster Tests In-Store, Kiosk-Type Low Pricing By Erik Gruenwedel RETAIL Blockbuster has quietly begun experimenting with in-store rental prices on new releases aimed at the burgeoning DVD kiosk market. According to sources at select store locations, pricing plans include $1.99 for a 24hour window, with subsequent days priced at a $1 per day. Customers would be billed upon the return of the title. Current in-store newrelease rental prices average about $5, and $4 for older titles with a seven-day grace period. By allowing just one stop for the rights to make Blu-ray, DVD and CD players, burners and discs, the Buoyed by strong subscriber growth attributed in part to its free Watch Instantly streaming service, Netflix CFO Barry McCarthy Feb. 25 told an investor group that by-mail DVD rentals remain key to providing a “compelling” consumer proposition.
