Home Media Magazine - September 21, 2008 - (Page 14) WOM EN WOMEN IN HOME ENTERTAINMENT A Strong Lineup T By Chris Tribbey he home entertainment industry has been rife with success stories, with tales of smart and savvy executives whose tenures as cap- tains of our industry have been marked by proactive decisions and strategic thinking. Like most industries, KELLEY Kelley Avery has had a good year, no doubt about that. Two of the year’s top three movies are from Paramount — Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull — and both are likely to be top sellers on DVD and Blu-ray Disc this holiday season. Last year was no different; with sales of nearly 14 million units, DreamWorks’ Transformers was the No. 1 movie of 2007, and its Blu-ray Disc debut less than a month ago ignited a sales rally that saw the film re-enter the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart at an impressive No. 3, primarily on the strength of its sales in the new format. Since Avery took the reigns of Paramount in 2006, after a long stint at DreamWorks SKG, these and other strong titles have helped the Worldwide President, former Disney marketing guru gobble up market share for her Paramount Home studio. In just two years, Paramount jumped from sixth to third, Entertainment and in 2007 generated a record $4.5 billion in revenue. A 23-year industry mainstay, Avery previously worked her golden touch at a much smaller studio, DreamWorks, where from 1998 until her move to Paramount two years ago she oversaw all domestic and international sales, distribution, manufacturing and marketing efforts for home entertainment product, much as she does now. Avery, a UCLA graduate, started with Buena Vista Home Entertainment (now Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment), where she was part of the team that helped launch the concept of a sellthrough business. Propelled by both theatrical hits and lucrative direct-to-video sequels, Disney soon became the No. 1 seller of home entertainment product, setting and then breaking records with such titles as Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. As Buena Vista’s SVP of retail marketing and merchandising, Avery also launched industry trends such as direct selling. After jumping ship to the then-nascent DreamWorks studio in 1998, she created an internationally recognizable home entertainment brand with such titles as Madagascar, Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator and the “Shrek” franchise. Now under Avery’s purview: home entertainment titles from Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Paramount Classics, Nickelodeon Movies, MTV Films, MTV, CBS, PBS, BET, Comedy Central, Logo, Hasbro and CMT, along with distribution services for DreamWorks Animation SKG. AVERY Hollywood has gone from being ruled by an old-boy network, both figuratively and literally, into one that transcends gender and other stereotypes and is now a melting pot of diverse faces, thoughts and ideas. In this issue, Home Media Magazine salutes the women of home entertainment, a powerful contingent of movers and shakers that has risen through the ranks over the years to become a potent force in the executive suites of the major studios as well as leading retailers and independent suppliers.
