Source: Home Media Research BRINGING DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT TO YOU DisplaySearch conference speakers don’t blame digital delivery for flat DVD sales, see promise in BD By Chris Tribbey OLLYWOOD, Calif. — Digital delivery options aren’t to blame for flattening DVD sales, speakers agreed at last week’s DisplaySearch conference, adding that physical and digital options are likely to coexist in the future. “Societal changes are gradual,” said Paul Erickson, director of DVD and HD market research for DisplaySearch during the HDTV 2008 Conference. “Physical disc isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.” The industry buried DVD before it was time, said Danny Kaye, SVP of business development for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. “That’s not to say that these emerging technologies won’t grow rapidly,” he said. “They will coexist.” That’s why, unlike the music industry, Hollywood is bowing to consumer demand, he Disc and Digital To Coexist Paramount Offering Two Pandas in One The studio is packaging ‘Kung Fu Panda’ with companion film By Thomas K. Arnold PRODUCT In what is believed to be an industry first, Paramount Home Entertainment is bundling its upcoming home video release of Kung Fu Panda with a direct-to-video companion film — and releasing the package on a Sunday, Nov. 9, instead of the traditional Tuesday. Most of the major studios are actively producing DTV sequels to major theatrical hits, but never before has one come out on video the same day as the original. And while studios have bowed titles on a Friday or a Monday, this is the first time a new release arrives on a Sunday. Kung Fu Panda, a DreamWorks Animation SKG hit that grossed $214.7 million at the U.S box office, will be available on both DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The companion film, Secrets of the Furious Five, is slugged, “The Kung Fu Panda story continues.” The film delves into the back stories of the Kung Fu Panda characters, with all-new animation and both Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman reprising their roles. What Paramount is calling the “Pandamonium Double Pack” will retail for less than $25. A single disc of Kung Fu Panda only also will be made available, priced below $20. H and Lori MacPherson, North American GM for Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, agreed.
