Home Media Magazine - October 5 - 11, 2008 - (Page 12) DVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT The High arner Home Video believes the future of home entertainment lies with Blu-ray Disc. So to help ease the consumer transition from standard DVD to the packaged media format of the future, the industry’s No. 1 Blu-ray Disc studio is offering two programs guaranteed to turn consumers into Blu-ray Disc collectors! To help Blu-ray Disc fans get a head start on their Blu-ray Disc libraries, Warner Home Video is launching a new value line of popular theatrical catalog hits retailing for just $15 — the price of a new DVD. “We realize consumers have made a sizeable investment in their DVD libraries, and this allows them to gradually replace their favorite movies in the much sharper, clearer, high-definition Blu-ray Disc format in an affordable way,” says Jeff Baker, EVP of theatrical catalog at Warner Home Video. “In order for Blu-ray Disc to realize its true potential and to add growth back into the packaged media business over the next few years, we must grow catalog adoption, not just day-and-date new release Blu-ray Disc conversions.” W &The Low Baker notes that less than 25% of Warner’s Blu-ray Disc universe will be eligible for value-line pricing, enough to jump-start the market while allowing retailers to charge a premium for the rest of Warner’s substantial catalog offerings. At the same time, Warner Home Video has begun releasing its prestigious multidisc Ultimate Collector’s Editions (UCE), long a favorite among diehard movie fans, on Blu-ray Disc, as well. The initiative launches Nov. 4 with A Christmas Story and continues through the end of this year with UCEs of Casablanca, JFK, 300 and I Am Legend. Suggested retail prices range from $34 to $64. “These films are among the gems of the Warner Bros. library,” Baker says. “Because they are packaged with so much extra material and collectable items ranging from postcards to movie stills and behind-the-scenes booklets, movie fans eagerly look forward to each new release on DVD. Now, they will be able to buy them in pristine Blu-ray Disc editions, as well.” Baker adds that retailers are enthusiastic about the new programs because the value line will likely spur Blu-ray Disc adoption, while the Ultimate Collector’s Editions sell at premium prices and provide retailers with healthy margins. “The whole idea behind Blu-ray Disc is that this is not a replacement technology,” Baker says. “Just as we grew the market for home entertainment with DVD a decade ago, we need to grow the market again with Blu-ray Disc. And by going after consumers on both ends of the price spectrum, we have a great shot at speeding up what most everyone now agrees will be an inevitable transition. “And this, in turn, will set the groundwork for an even bigger home entertainment pie in the years to come.”
