Home Media Magazine - October 26-November 1, 2008 - (Page 17) REVIEWS I FUTURAMA: BENDER’S GAME Street 11/4 Edited by John Latchem The premise is a riff on 1980s urban legends about kids going crazy playing D&D and wandering the sewers looking for treasure or turning to Satanism. In a movie such as this, the story is almost irrelevant, as the creators throw gag after gag at the audience. With the fantasy setting, many of them lampoon “The Lord of the Rings.” Fans are sure to love this installment, as the creators seem to have found a nice balance in crafting a 90-minute narrative that can be chopped into four distinct storylines. The disc includes the usual assortment of extras. The best one this time around is a tribute to Dungeons & Dragons from producer David X. Cohen and some of the show’s writers. Also good is a featurette in which the animators show viewers how to draw certain characters. The disc also includes crowded commentary with several of the actors, producers and writers (available as a picture-in-picture extra on the Blu-ray version), and a brief preview of the next “Futurama” epic, Into the Wild Green Yonder, slated for release next year. – John Latchem www.homemediamagazine.com he writers and producers of “Futurama” display an eerie Fox, Comedy, $29.98 DVD, $39.98 Blu-ray, NR. prescience with Bender’s Voices of Billy West, John DiMaggio, Katey Sagal, Game, the third direct-to-video followMaurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, Rich Little. up to the TV series. Though it was written and animated months ago, the movie manages to fit right in with its Election Day street date, cracking jokes about energy costs, drilling in Alaska, and even putting lipstick on dogs. Any political overtones are clearly unintentional. Instead, the gags fuel a nonsensical plot that transforms the show’s usual scifi setting into a fantasy framework that pays homage to the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. The movie is dedicated to late D&D co-creator Gary Gygax, who once guested on the show. T I MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER cheesy as the movies it lambasted. But 3000: 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION that was the point: fun stupidity. Street 10/28 Shout! Factory, Comedy, $69.99 four-DVD set, NR. Stars Joel Hodgson, Mike Nelson, Trace Beaulieu, Jim Mallon. or every good film, there are a dozen movies that don’t quite measure up. And just as there is an abundance of cheesy movies, there is no shortage of fanboys willing to make fun of them. At the center of the action was “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” the show that ushered in a new pantheon of film criticism by offering a different bad movie each week and a running commentary to make fun of it. The show underwent several changes over the years, but the basic premise involved some evil scientist trapping an ordinary guy (first Hodgson, then Nelson) on a space station (The Satellite of Love) and forcing him and his robot friends to watch cheesy movies. In many ways the setup was almost as F Starting in 1988, the show was a hit on local Minnesota TV before moving to the new Comedy Channel (now Comedy Central) in 1989, and later to Sci Fi Channel from 1997 to 1999. This 20th anniversary collection offers four episodes representative of the show’s run: First Spaceship on Venus, the Comedy Central finale Laserblast, Werewolf and Future War. Distinguishing this new boxed set from earlier collections is a three-part documentary detailing the complete history of the show. Rounding out the extras is a reel that collects every different version of the title song, often altered to reflect cast changes. That the show was able to endure is a testament to the concept. Nelson and his pals continue to poke fun at movies with their “Film Crew” DVD series and at RiffTrax.com. – John Latchem http://www.homemediamagazine.com http://www.RiffTrax.com http://www.whvdirect.com
