The research company says the region will see a spike in LCD TV shipments over the next four years. Shipments of LCD TVs to the region will rise to 18.7 million units in 2012, up from 3.1 million in 2007, according to iSuppli. LCD TV shipments to Latin America will account for more than 83% of the market by 2012, up from 16.5% in 2007. “Most of the growth in Latin American television shipments now comes from the increased adoption of flat-panel TVs, mainly LCD TVs,” said Riddhi Patel, principal analyst, television systems, for iSuppli. Patel said many Latin American countries are seeing their consumers replace their first-generation CRT TVs, which were typically smaller than 26 inches, with 26- inch or larger LCD TVs. Brazil is the largest market in Latin America for LCD TVs, accounting for 34.6% of the region’s shipments in 2008. The country’s LCD shipments are expected to rise to 46% in 2012. “Increased domestic production of LCD TVs, rising awareness, declining prices, availability of consumer credit and consumer interest in replacing older TVs with new technologies are the drivers for increased LCD TV uptake,” Patel said. ■ MVD VISUAL Jan. 20 releases Azteca: La Piedra Del Sol (DVD $19.95) and Azteca: From the Ruins (DVD $16.95).
