The federal judge in the case ruled earlier in July that Google, YouTube’s parent company, had to share data about what YouTube users were watching, to help Viacom determine how much was user-generated content and how much was copyrighted material. That ruling resulted in dozens of anti-Viacom YouTube videos, many calling for a boycott against Viacom- BRIEFS I FCC CHAIR CHIDES COMCAST The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will recommend punishment of Comcast Corp. for allegedly blocking peer-to-peer traffic among its customers, and said he hopes the FCC’s action will serve as a warning to other Internet service providers. – Chris Tribbey T he new owner of shuttered MovieBeam plans to re-launch the on-demand service in select North America markets by year’s end. Sanjay Gaikwad, head of Valuable Group, an Indian-based digital entertainment and gaming technology company, said he plans to invest $100 million to resurrect the service. “This acquisition … will allow us to deliver ethnic and Hollywood content to homes and the hospitality industry worldwide,” Gaikwad said. Valuable Group, which has offices in Los Angeles and Seattle, acquired license and distribution rights to MovieBeam from private equity firm Dar Capital for an undisclosed amount. Dar in May acquired the service’s intellectual assets from Movie Gallery Inc. for $2.2 million. “We have added some cutting edge features to the service that will bring additional and currently unrealized revenue back to the entertainment industry,” said Ameya Hete, executive director with Valuable and CEO of MovieBeam. He said he hopes the new service will redefine on-demand entertainment. Y owned products, including Paramount Pictures, MTV and Comedy Central. YouTube users said they felt they were being targeted by the decision and feared Viacom would next come after them personally. The new agreement will let YouTube preserve the anonymity of its users when it turns over its video records. “We remain committed to protecting your privacy, and we’ll continue to fight for your right to share and broadcast your work on YouTube,” the Web site said in its daily blog. Viacom hasn’t issued a statement on the decision.
