DIRECTOR STEVAN MENA: ‘BRUTAL MASSACRE’ A I MAVERICK ENTERTAINMENT Oct. 28 (prebook Sept. 26) streets 13 Hours in a Warehouse (DVD $16.98), about a group of guys who pull off the perfect heist and wait in an abandoned warehouse for their buyer, all the while feeling like they are being watched. Comedy’ By Billy Gil t’s a good thing writer-director Stevan Mena’s latest film, Brutal Massacre, is subtitled “a comedy.” Mena said there’s been retailer confusion over his film, which is, in fact, not a horror film but a comedy with little in the way of gore, real or simulated. “I think they’re a little confused by the title, thinking it’s a gross horror film when in fact it’s a straight-up comedy,” Mena said. “I kind of find that amusing, and I think it’s really ironic.” The reaction is appropriate because Brutal Massacre: A Comedy, which hits DVD July 22 from Anchor Bay Entertainment ($26.97), is a mockumentary following the fictional exploits of ‘B’-movie horror director Harry Penderecki, purveyor of such films as I’ll Take the Ring Back … and the Finger Too! and Sasquatch at the Mall. The DVD includes a making-of featurette as well as 17 extended and deleted scenes. “There’s a scene where Harry finds his movie in the dollar bin, so I find it amusing that retailers have responded that way,” Mena said. In the film, Penderecki goes about filming his latest in a series of filmic misfortunes, Brutal Massacre. Shoddy camerawork, actors walking off the set and inept special effects are nothing compared to other obstacles the crew faces, such as gun-toting hunters in season, the sudden death of a crew member and a septic tank mishap. The film has a similar feel to mockumentaries such as This Is Spinal Tap and Best in Show, with plenty ‘Straight-up I BRAIN DAMAGE FILMS Aug. 5 offers Abe’s Tomb, Black Ribbon, Dr. Shock’s Grindhouse of Horrors and Johnny Sunshine for $14.98 each. Streeting Sept. 2 (prebook Aug. 12) are Bachelor Party in the Bungalow of the Damned, Deceptors, Skeleton Key 2 and Watch Me for $14.98 each. I of inside-jokes for horror fans and attendees of such festivals as Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors. Brutal Massacre also boasts numerous appearances by fanboy elite, such as David Naughton (An American Werewolf in London), Brian O’Halloran (Clerks), Ellen Sandweiss (The Evil Dead), Ken Foree (the original Dawn of the Dead), Gunnar Hansen (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), Betsy Baker (The Evil Dead), Mick Garris (“Masters of Horror” director of such fare as “The Stand”) and Theresa Tilly (The Evil Dead). Publicity for the film included a YouTube trailer contest, held at youtube.com/group/brutalmassacre, where fans could create trailers for Penderecki’s films for a chance at $1,000 or a DVD 10-pack from Anchor Bay (the contest closed last week). Additionally, some of the cast, such as Sandweiss and Tilly, have been at Q&A sessions at screenings for the film, which is touring the film festival and horror festival circuits. Though the film seems to spoof the horror festivals it courts — at one point a crazed horror fan tries to shoot Penderecki — Mena said the film doesn’t aim to poke fun at fans, but rather the seriousness of those behind the scenes. Mena would know. His first film was the 2004 horror flick Malevolence, and his next is its sequel, Malevolence: Bereavement, due this year. “For the most part, these films get panned, but they have a diehard core of fans,” Mena said. “If you win over the horror crowd, you can [count on them forever].” I GENIUS PRODUCTS Coming July 22 are Last Winter (DVD $24.95) and Maneater Collection Vol. 1 (DVD $26.95).
