The study, conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Veoh Networks, polled more than 1,000 engaged viewers of online video. Of these viewers, those who watched long-form content were found to be more likely to watch videos all the way through, to agree that advertising is fair and helps pay for the free experience, and to be twice as likely to recall in-video ads and post-rolls than non-engaged viewers. — Kyra Kudick ELECTRONIC DELIVERY Study: TV Shows, Social Networks Boost Online Videos By Erik Gruenwedel he increased availability of network television programming, movies and user-generated content has resulted in nearly double (63%) the number of online video viewers compared to last year (32%), according to a new report. Based on a survey of online house- T holds, ABI Research found that ad-supported programming, videos on YouTube and MySpace, and overall demand for short-and-long form video content has increased. “Consumers are changing their online habits quickly,” says research director Michael Wolf. “Broadband speeds have continued to increase at the same time that Hollywood has decided online distribution is a legitimate monetization opportunity that will increase total return on their video assets, and expand audiences.” The ABI study suggests that online video consumption remains the fancy of youth. It found nearly 50% of respondents under age 25 and 53% ages 25 to 29 said they watched online TV shows or movies once a month or more. Conversely, about 75% of respondents older than 65 said they never watched TV shows or movies online. “Today’s younger consumers are developing habits that will mean drastic changes for the video entertainment market,” Wolf said. I TECH GROUP TO DEVELOP CONTENT STANDARD The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) wants a standard for delivering broadband content, and it’s not waiting for anyone else to come up with one. The technical group said a set standard for mastering and packaging content for broadband network distribution would “fuel fresh business models by enabling consumers to purchase entertainment from any online destination and play it back on any device.” SMPTE is forming a technical committee, which will first meet Oct. 27 before SMPTE’s Annual Tech Conference and Expo in Hollywood. The committee also will be tasked with establishing procedures for uniform captions and subtitles for content. — Chris Tribbey I AUTOS GET CONNECTED A study by iSuppli Corp. shows that more than half of all automobiles sold in the United States next year will offer iPod connectivity. For 2008, iPod integration options were expected in 39% of vehicles in the United States. For 2009, that number will climb to 58%. Integration with other portable media players will be offered through a USB interface option in 33% of U.S. autos, up from 16% in 2008. — Kyra Kudick I EIDOS, MICROSOFT OFFER EXTRA GAME CHAPTERS Eidos Interactive, publisher of the “Tomb Raider” video game series, and Microsoft will release two new downloadable chapters of the Xbox 360 game Tomb Raider: Underworld, available through the Xbox Live digital marketplace. “Beneath the Ashes” will be available around Christmas, while “Lara’s Shadow” will be available in early 2009.
