The move comes after the FCC ordered the cable and Internet service provider to change how it regulates Internet traffic, after users complained Comcast was blocking downloads by those who used peer-topeer networks, such as BitTorrent. – Chris Tribbey www.homemediamagazine.com CinemaNow Expands Beyond the PC By Erik Gruenwedel ovie download pioneer CinemaNow has signed a deal with Widevine Technologies that for the first time will allow downloads and streams to consumer electronics devices running Windows, Mac or Linux operating platforms. A director’s cut Blu-ray Disc will be distributed via magazines this October, featuring all seven episodes plus music and movie content from Sony BMG and Sony Pictures. – Billy Gil Ray, Calif.-based service’s movie and TV show downloads — heretofore limited by DRM restrictions to PCbased devices — to encroach upon Apple’s iTunes platform. The Apple iPod, which controls about 70% of the portable media market, still excludes all non-iTunes licensed content. Widevine’s open DRM and digital copy protection would allow CinemaNow users to purchase, stream and download movies, TV shows and music videos, regardless of their computing platform or browser — greatly expanding the service’s commercial reach while also placating security concerns of the studios. Seattle-based Widevine says its multiformat digital copy protection and forensic watermarking solutions are used by more than 130 service providers and 160 Web properties. “CinemaNow’s strategy is closely aligned with Widevine’s strategy to seamlessly expand consumers’ ability to watch premium content on the device of their choice, wherever and whenever they want,” said Brian Baker, Widevine CEO. Rob Enderle, independent analyst with Enderle Group in San Jose, Calif., said Mac users are traditionally very loyal to Apple. He said it would be hard to believe that a third-party vendor can move against an Apple product or service on an Apple platform product. “Recall that even Microsoft pulled their dominant browser off Apple because they couldn’t compete with them,” Enderle said. “Somehow I doubt CinemaNow has anywhere near as much clout as Microsoft did.” INTERNET VIDEO REVENUE: TV- AND NON- TV BASED* $7,000 $6,000 $5,000 $4,000 $3,000 $2,000 $1,000 $0 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 I Non-TV Internet Videos ($M) I TV-based Internet Video ($M) * Millions of Dollars, U.S. Broadband Households Higher-Capacity 160 GB PS3 Heads to Stores in November By John Gaudiosi ony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) is upping the ante on storage capacity for its PlayStation 3. The report from Parks Associates said increased availability of connected video game consoles, networked TVs and videoon-demand (VOD) set-top boxes will spearhead revenue growth. Kurt Scherf, VP, principal analyst of Parks Associates, said advances in adver- tising-supported movie streams, targeted advertising, download-to-burn kiosks and on-demand venues will spur the Internet video market. “New connected products that link to premium Internet video services are emerging at a rapid pace, moving the Web video viewing experience into the living room,” Scherf said. “This shift will help grow revenue considerably.” more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding more storage capacity,” Tretton said. “Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand in a compelling bundle that delivers significant value.” Sony has just started shipping its $400 80GB PS3 to retailers nationwide. This model was announced at the E3 Summit in July and is replacing the 40GB PS3 model. From January to July 2008, more than 1.8 million PS3s have been sold in the United States, representing year-todate hardware sales growth of 99%.
