BRIEFS I BATANGA HITS 10.8M Batanga has 10.8 million U.S. visitors, according to comScore Media Metrix. The audience includes visitors to the company' s Web site, Batanga.com, and the recently attained HispanoClick ad network. HispanoClick features various channel listings that include entertainment, automotive and business. L The genre saw 2.1 million units shipped in 2007, a 2.3% increase from 2006. Sales totalled $3.3 million, a 3.5% increase from 2006. This is good news for Latin music video as 2006 saw an 18.4% decrease in unit shipments and a 22.3% drop in sales from 2005. For 2007, Latin CD unit sales dropped 19.3% to 33.6 million, with a 23.2% drop in sales to $431 million. I VENEVISION LICENSES WWEBNET TECH WWEBNET has licensed its proprietary business-to-business electronic broadcast network technology to Venevision International. The company will use the technology as a branded broadcast channel for more efficient delivery of television programming online. The move to electronic transmission of content is predicted to reduce production costs and marketing expenses. Disturbia I STARMEDIA UNVEILS NEW ENTERTAINMENT CHANNEL starMedia has launched starMedia EntertaiNEWS, an online channel that will provide Spanish speakers with the most up-to-date global entertainment news and programming. The channel, developed with C3 Entertainment, also provides information about concerts, movies, theater and cultural events. I WESHOW.COM LAUNCHES SPANISH VIDEO NETWORKS WeShow.com (www.weshow.es), the publicly created guide to the online video sector, has launched My WeShow, a network focused on videos in Spanish. My WeShow users can become editor and aggregator for their personalized video portal with subject indexation. The site combines video content and a social aspect to provide a personalized view of the top videos around the world. The site also enables users to share a 50% profit split from Google ads on their video, profile and community pages. Paramount Courts Latinos By Angelique Flores SUPPLIER Paramount Home Entertainment is making some of its biggest hits available to the Spanish-speaking population. The studio will release top Paramount and DreamWorks DVD titles in new Spanish-language packaging. The first wave hits May 20 and includes such family fare as the ªS hrekº films, Madagascar, Over the Hedge, Flushed Away and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. Also slated are actioners, thrillers and dramas such as the ªI ndiana Jonesº films, Transformers, Next, Disturbia and a special collector's edition of Flashdance. The DVDs each will have a band on the cover calling out ªEn Españolº to distinguish the product. All the text on the packaging Ð title, synopsis and other information Ð will be translated into Spanish. Every DVD in this line also will include a I TERRA, WARNER PARTNER ON MANÁ DVD RELEASE Terra Networks and Warner Music have partnered for the upcoming DVD release featuring Mexican rock group Maná. The two companies have created a bilingual online experience featuring contests, photo galleries, community pages, blogs and exclusive interviews. The first phase includes the relaunch of the artist page with new videos, galleries and exclusive preview footage of the DVD in addition to a contest for fans to compete to become the ultimate Maná fan. The winner will attend the release party and be the ª Official Maná Blogger.º I STUDY: LATIN AMERICAN DTH AND IPTV GROWTH SNL Kagan' s most recent study found that Telmex and Telefonica claimed 4.8 million pay-TV customers in Latin America at the end of 2007. Telefonica' s LatinAm pay-TV investments comprise cable and multichannel multipoint distribution service buyouts and launches of directto-home platforms. Telmex has grown via direct-to-home or cable buyouts as well. I STUDY: HISPANICS ARE WEB SAVVY Spanish soundtrack. ªW ith a growing Spanish-speaking population, we feel it makes sense to deliver a complete package that will appeal to them,º said John Kim, VP of catalog brand marketing at Paramount. Terra has released a study by comScore that shows online Hispanics are very involved with technology. Of the respondents, 66% reported they are up to date with the most recent developments. Internet usage now exceeds TV as 56% reported spending at least an hour a day online, in contrast to the 50% who reported spending an hour watching TV. Of the participants, 72% keep TVs and computers in the same room, and 75% use them simultaneously. In response to technology and entertainment in the last six months, 73% reported that they regularly rented movies, 69% bought CDs, 68% bought a movie and 40% downloaded music. I UNIVISION PRESENTS HISPANIC MEASURING TOOL Univision Communications, along with Nielsen Media and Nielsen Homescan, has merged information about TV viewing and purchase date, aiming to strengthen marketer strategy. The company also has introduced data from a Simmons study addressing Hispanic media habits, illustrating growth in the use of Spanish-language media. Over the Hedge I MYSPACE LATINO DEBUTS MySpace has officially launched its bilingual Latino destination, MySpace Latino (latino.myspace.com). The new site features culturally relevant content geared toward the interests of Hispanic MySpace users. The community is launching with eight new sub-communities, including entertainment, fashion, music, nightlife and soccer. Also, Spanish Broadcasting Systems is partnering with MySpace to promote its TV shows, radio stations and Web sites ± Ruby Cardenas on MySpace. I TV GLOBO CLOSES CLIX SMARTV DEAL TV Globo has cut a deal with IPTV operator Clix SmarTV to deliver its premium international channel in Portugal, according to worldscreen.com. TV Globo is now available via satellite and cable in Portugal and has more than 20,000 subscribers.
