BY STEPHANIE PRANGE Our partner, Peter Marmon, head of Christian Entertainment Review Inc., argues that the DVD industry is the next frontier for Christian retailers who have built the segment in the book and music businesses. He says it’s crucial to their continued growth. “Christian retailers who are willing to adapt and capitalize should now prepare for the next big growth opportunity: the DVD marketplace,” Marmon contends. “The burgeoning Christian film industry is actually still in its infancy.” Without the boost that The Passion of the Christ gave it in 2004, pushing it to 4% of the total film industry, the Christian film market would have been less than 0.1% of the film business that year, he notes. There’s a lot of growth left to bring films to the level of Christian music and books, he says. Thus, he is calling all Christian retailers on a crusade of sorts to deliver appropriate filmed entertainment to Christians through DVD. It’s not just a calling; it also makes good business sense. Christian retailers have been leaders in finding products for their customers. With DVD, they have yet another chance to lead.
