Home Media Magazine - June 29 - July 5, 2008 - (Page 24) ADVERTISEMENTADVERTISEMENTADVERTISEMENTADVERTISEMENTADVERTISEMENTADVERTISEMENTADVERTISEMENTADVERTISEMENT FROM THE BEGINNING TO 2008 AND BEYOND! ver since its founding in the early ’90s, Anchor Bay Entertainment in many ways hearkened back to the Golden Age of Motion Pictures. During the 1930s, the major studios were defined by their output: MGM had the best musicals, Warner Bros. made the grittiest gangster pics and Columbia the funniest comedies. Decades later, Anchor Bay Entertainment adopted the exact same mission: presenting the best in classic and contemporary horror for the passionate fan, the casual movie-watcher and film lovers in-between. Hitting its stride with the transition from VHS to DVD, Anchor Bay sought to present horror and cult films buried deep within the collective pop consciousness of film fans the world over and give them respect — with the best possible transfers and audio mixes, as well as thoughtful and plentiful bonus content. The result? Nearly 15 years of maintaining a reputation appreciated by our audiences and envied by our peers. From the first (of many) DVD releases of Sam Raimi’s seminal “The Evil Dead” trilogy, to the elegant Hammer thrillers and the recent critically acclaimed Dario Argento E Box Set, consumers time and again look to Anchor Bay to find their favorite horror classics and discover new terrifying gems to add to their DVD libraries. Over the years, the Bay has released such classic titles as John Carpenter’s Halloween, Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes, George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator, Dario Argento’s Phenomena and Tenebre, Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm and Clive Barker’s Hellraiser — many times in definitive, filmmaker-approved special editions boasting remastered picture and sound, with supplements covering the gamut from insightful cast and crew commentary tracks, intriguing behind-thescenes and retrospective featurettes, to complete promotional materials including original theatrical trailers, TV spots, poster artwork and production photographs. Not content with just looking back, Anchor Bay has continually looked ahead to discover the next Masters of Horror. Films like Adam Green’s Hatchet, Ryan Schifrin’s Abominable, Matthew Leutwyler’s Dead & Breakfast, Stevan Mena’s Malevolence and Brutal Massacre (bowing July 22), the German Night of the Living Dorks (soon to be Americanized by a major studio), Chris Sivertson’s The Lost and Jesse Baget’s Wrestlemaniac are but a few of the next wave of scaremeisters the label is proud to showcase. “Fans and critics alike look to Anchor Bay for the best in horror product,” said Flo Schultheiss, VP of marketing. Anchor Bay virtually championed theme packaging, with such innovative and award-winning packages as The Evil Dead: Book of the Dead fleshy packaging for the first two films, Repo Man’s license-plate shaped tin, the “Masters of Horror” Season One mausoleum set and the upcoming “Masters of Horror” Season Two skull set. For the rest of 2008, fans can expect such stellar Anchor Bay DVD releases as: Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer, a new horror/comedy starring Robert “Freddy Krueger” Englund; a brand-new DVD release of Phantasm IV with an all-new commentary track by writer-director Don Coscarelli and Angus “The Tall Man” Scrimm; the Starz Originals documentary Bloodsucking Cinema; a quartet of independent horror films, including Bryan Loves You and The Vanguard; and for early 2009, the film Cold Prey. High-definition fans can look forward to the Blu-ray releases of Children of the Corn and Hellraiser. And, no doubt, there’s a surprise release or two lurking around the corner — including one that celebrates the 30th anniversary of a horror icon! 24 Home Media Magazine June 29–July 5, 2008
