And, strangely enough, Oliver Hodge’s documentary on Michael Reynolds, the eco-architect who took on New Mexico’s legislature to get a bill passed to build test-sites for sustainable housing, plays as just that: A story of heroism in the age of climate change. “It’s a state of emergency,” Hodge said of our current global standing. “I think the film shows someone standing up to the system and trying to change it. And it shows the speed of change is not fast enough.” Garbage Warrior makes that case pointedly. The film hits DVD Aug. 12 (prebook July 8) from Morningstar Entertainment at $24.98. The packaging is printed on 100% recycled board with vegetable ink, and the DVD tray is made from 100% recycled plastic with at least 35% post-consumer materials. Hodge, a native Brit who grew up on a farm and went on to create props and models for high-profile films over the years such as Die Another Day, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Star Wars: Episode I, said he has been concerned with environmental issues for some time. He met Reynolds in Brighton, England, in the summer of 2003 when Reynolds was working on a sustainable housing project there and Hodge filmed it. That project inspired Hodge to make a feature-length film with Reynolds and follow him to Taos, N.M., where Reynolds and OMO:EarthNOW! (DVD $19.95). And people are feeling it because of fuel prices. “People are tired of the doom and gloom and they are desperate to find a way out. They need inspiration. People don’t necessarily know that you could go out and do this yourself on a fairly low budget.” Even if the film doesn’t make its viewers want to jump into sustainable housing (building and maintaining them is a lot of hard work), it could make viewers despise excess bureaucracy. Some of the most entertaining bits of the film come after a local planning committee pulls the plug on Reynolds’ housing developments, and Reynolds takes the issue to New Mexico’s legislature. “The idea of having that was to show that the kind of bureaucracy and the kind of apathy you get from that system,” Hodge said. Reynolds and his crew also travel to the Andaman Islands to help build sustainable houses after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The DVD includes deleted scenes of this trip. “We were inspired by their resilience and sewage system. In short, Reynolds and his crew determination and spirits,” Hodge said. “They aim to have each home take care of its inhabit- had fun being involved with the project.
