Home Media Magazine - November 2-November 8, 2008 - (Page 12) ELECTRONIC DELIVERY I CINEMANOW, TIVO TO STREAM DISNEY MOVIES Broadband-enabled TiVo subscribers can now stream Walt Disney movies directly to the television through a deal with CinemaNow. Titles include Dumbo, The Fox and the Hound and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and are available in standarddefinition starting at $2.99 each. High-definition availability of Disney titles and other studio fare from CinemaNow is slated for 2009, according to a spokesperson. Separately, Alviso, Calif.-based TiVo and Jaman.com announced a deal that lets TiVo users access a series of Oscar-nominated documentaries, arthouse, foreign and film festival rentals, starting at $1.99. CinemaNow, which has about 14,000 titles from all the major studios, also inked a distribution deal with Dell whereby movies will be preloaded for download on the PC manufacturer’s laptops. Content will be made available for download throughout Dell’s entire line of PCs, media centers and portable devices, according to Ashley Woodworth, SVP of marketing with CinemaNow. Woodworth said the service’s ongoing strategy is to embed CinemaNow technology and content into third-party desktop and portable media devices. “Ideally, we are gunning for connectivity within the living room,” she said. – Erik Gruenwedel www.homemediamagazine.com I NETFLIX STREAMS MOVIES TO SELECT MACS Online DVD rental pioneer Netflix will begin using new software that for the first time will allow Mac users to stream movies. Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix’s Instant Watch streaming service — launched in 2007 — heretofore has only worked on PCs equipped with Microsoft Windows Media Player. Microsoft Silverlight software works with newer-edition Macs outfitted with microchips A&E Home Video launches Blu-ray into the stratosphere with two out of this world releases from Intel Corp., which Netflix said represent about 75% of its Mac-based subscribers. The new Netflix movie player features improved fast-forwarding and rewinding capabilities, in addition to digital rights management that allows for the playback of protected content on both Windows-based PCs and on Macs. “It’s really fast, too,” said Netflix spokesperson Steve Swasey. Netflix continues to aggressively court digital distribution of movies and TV shows, and features a library of more than 12,000 streams. Richard Doherty, technology analyst with The Envisioneering Group in New York, said Netflix has a tremendous opportunity to expand its revenue audience and bottom line in the coming quarters through streaming. “A lot of people are just not as able to buy the TV series sets and mega packs even as they are discounted at retail,” Doherty said. – Erik Gruenwedel I FIOS GETS ON-DEMAND ABC TV Verizon Communication’s fiber-optic television network Oct. 28 got a boost when Disney-ABC Television Group said it would offer its primetime network line-up for free through video-on-demand (VOD) in high-definition. The ad-supported programming is available the day after its network airing with one catch: It cannot be fast-forwarded. As with other ABC VOD offerings, Verizon agreed to disable the fast-forward option on its FiOS TV VOD service. In return the fledgling network gets much-needed programming and ABC can guarantee its advertisers expanded coverage and more eyeballs. ABC first made the fast-forward-disabled VOD offering available last fall during a trial in California. During the trial, third-party conducted research found that 93% of users of fastforwarding-disabled ABC VOD content found the advertising acceptable in exchange for gaining free access to their favorite shows. The research also found that the addition of ABC programming to VOD grew expanded consumer interest in the platform and increased frequency of usage by previous users. – Erik Gruenwedel I GOOGLE SEEKS COPYRIGHT COP’S RECORDS Google is alleging Viacom continued to upload content onto YouTube and then told a cyber copyright monitor to ignore the clips, despite previously filing a $1 billion copyright infringement lawsuit against the popular social video network site. Google, which owns YouTube, filed the motion Oct. 27 in U.S. Federal Court in San Jose, Calif. Google is seeking access to records from BayTSP Inc., a copyright policing company contracted by Viacom and on whose data the media giant is reportedly basing much of its case. Google says Viacom, via BayTSP, has had the ability to police its content online and selectively chose not to for marketing reasons. Google, which contends it is not responsible for the use of pirated material by its users, claims it has always moved to remove infringing material when notified by copyright holders. Representatives from Google, Viacom and BayTSP were not available for comment by press time. – Erik Gruenwedel The Universe: The Complete Season One Blu-ray Edition Timed to street with the broadcast premiere of Season 3, THE UNIVERSE: THE COMPLETE SEASON ONE BLU-RAY EDITION will be promoted in-episode during the highly publicized first run.
