Home Media Magazine - January 26 - February 1, 2009 - (Page 12) HIGH-DEF By Chris Tribbey resident Barack Obama’s administration is still seeking a delay to the Feb. 17 digital television transition. Obama top aide John Podesta has sent a second letter to Congress urging a delay to the analog switch-off to allow consumers more time to prepare, the Washington Post reported. Podesta sent lawmakers a letter Jan. 8 suggesting the government wasn’t prepared for the potential fallout of millions of Americans without TV. “Since then, the situation has only www.homemediamagazine.com Digital Transition in Flux P gotten worse,” Podesta wrote in the Jan. 19 letter obtained by the Post. “Lack of appropriate planning has left many consumers vulnerable.” Two separate bills have been introduced that would delay the analog shutoff to June 12, and both bills ask for additional funding for a $40 digital converter box coupon program. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced earlier this month that it had run out of the $1.34 billion Congress allocated to the program. One of the bills would extend the ex- piration date for coupons that haven’t been redeemed yet to mid-September. That bill, introduced by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), is meeting with opposition from House Republicans. Verizon Communications and AT&T have come out in support of a minor delay, while trade group CTIA – The Wireless Association is against it. While Nielsen research pegs the number of homes that would have no TV if the shut-off happens Feb. 17 at just under 9 million, research firm Centris Jan. 21 said that as many as 14.6 million homes could be affected.
