The show consists of three parts, runs for about 45 minutes and is available for download from iTunes for $1.99 per episode. Whedon, the cast and writers discussed the project with fans during a panel July 25 at San Diego Comic-Con International 2008. He couldn’t escape questions about whether the cancellation of his previous series, “Firefly,” after only 11 episodes influenced his turning to the Internet for a project. Another fan remarked that Whedon’s newest show, “Dollhouse,” scheduled to debut on Fox next year, already has fans making Web sites devoted to saving it. “I approach things differently, and I take it one episode at a time,” Whedon said. “Any episode we get is a bonus, and then any episode we don’t get out … I can make stuff on the Internet now.” I First DVR then DVR again 10% Source: Integrated Media Measurement Inc. REPORT: 20% OF PRIME-TIME TV SHOWS VIEWED ONLINE By Erik Gruenwedel S Whedon said “Dr. Horrible” demonstrated that creators could produce quality content for widespread distribution. “This really was designed to be a model for a new way to put out media, a new form of artistic community that involves all of [the fans] and all of us and maybe not so much some other people,” Whedon said. “I’m an advocate of evolution over revolution. I’m not trying to bring down the studios. I do still work there … and I’m grateful for it, and I love ‘Dollhouse’ and love what we’re doing. But things are changing, and it’s really important that we make sure that as they change, they change for the better, and ‘Dr. Horrible’ is just a little bit about that — about putting that power in different hands.” A downloadable soundtrack will be available within a few weeks, Whedon said. The creators said they are considering a fourth installment and are putting together extras for an eventual DVD release, such as a musical commentary called “Commentary! The Musical.” Joss’ brother Jed, one of the “Dr. Horrible” writers, announced a contest for fans to submit audition tapes of less than three minutes for the Evil League of Evil, with the top 10 videos included on the DVD. A distributor for the DVD was not announced. T he TV audience for prime-time network programming is increasingly moving online and away from the digital video recorder (DVR), according to a new report. The study by Integrated Media Measurement Inc. found that 20% of prime-time programming was viewed online, and 50% of viewers did so as a TV replacement. More than 31% of respondents watched online to catch-up on missed TV programming and 18.7% watched the Web rebroadcasts as fill-in content. The report also showed that the largest segment of online television viewers (55%) consists of white, affluent, welleducated, working women ages 25-44. The study tracked 14 prime-time shows viewed by 3,000 teens and adults. MPAA Sues Streaming Sites By Erik Gruenwedel he Motion Picture Association of America has filed copyright infringement lawsuits against two Web sites it alleges offer free adsupported streams of top Hollywood movies, including The Dark Knight, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, 10,000 B.C., Hancock and Wall-E. The civil suits, filed July 28 in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, are against Movierumor.com and Fomdb. com. Operating on servers located in Charlotte, N.C., and Chicago, the defendants’ sites offer home pages with T embedded video players supported by third-party ads that attract 27,000 unique visitors daily, according to the complaints. “There are many people operating illegal Web sites like these who are profiting from the theft of protected content,” said John Malcolm, EVP and director of worldwide anti-piracy operations for the MPAA. The MPAA has filed seven similar suits against other sites since June 2007, and in May was awarded multimillion-dollarjudgmentsagainstShowstash.com and Cinematube.com.
