Home Media Magazine - August 3-9, 2008 - (Page 8) HIGH-DEF www.homemediamagazine.com Sony Puts ‘Starship Troopers 3’ Panel on BD Live Network By Billy Gil AN DIEGO — Sony Pictures Home Entertainment held a panel July 26 at San Diego Comic-Con International 2008 for the Aug. 5 release of Starship Troopers 3: Marauder on Blu-ray Disc — that panel will be included as a feature on Sony’s BD Live network, downloadable with the disc. “You’re being taped for a BD Live presentation …” said Fritz Friedman, SVP of worldwide publicity at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Friedman introduced the panel, which included star Casper Van Dien (returning as Johnny Rico after appearing in the first “Starship Troopers” installment, but not the second) as well as writer/director Edward Neumeier and co-star Jolene Blalock (“Star Trek: Enterprise”). “He’s talking about the issues we’re dealing with today,” Blalock S ‘X Files’ Filmmakers Embrace Blu-ray By Fred Topel -Files” producer and co-writer Frank Spotnitz is still planning the Blu-ray Disc release of the latest film, The X-Files: I Want to Believe. The film hit theaters July 25, but Spotnitz and director Chris Carter are still exploring all the capabilities of the new format. “I had no idea what Blu-ray could do,” Spotnitz said. “I thought it was just a higher-definition picture, but it’s much more than that. We are trying to think of every possible way to exploit the Blu-ray medium. Those discussions are still continuing. We’ve been working on the Bluray and the DVD release for months already. It’s going to be packed with a lot of bonus features.” Spotnitz’s acknowledged that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment eventually will confirm the details. “I’m sure they’ll want to announce what is on them specifically, but “X there will be a gag reel; a making of, as there always are; multiple commentaries; both audio and video that you can access in a unique way because its Blu-ray,” Spotnitz said. “We are going to take advantage of the online feature in a way we haven’t determined yet.” “X-Files” fans also can expect to see additional footage in two different forms. “There is an extended version of the movie, then there are deleted scenes,” Spotnitz said. “I’m going to get it wrong if I try to tell you which scenes are going into which. There will be a lot of extras.” Whichever scenes end up going in an alternate version of the film would only make subtle differences. “It’s not significantly longer,” he said. “It’s only a few minutes longer, but it’s more explicit, and a little more emotional, believe it or not.” said of the influence of politics and religion on the script by Neumeier, who wrote the first film as well as the direct-to-video release Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation. Although he has written a number of films (namely Robocop), Marauder is his first film as director. A clip of the action-packed film showed the inclusion of mechanical Marauder powersuits, much to the audible delight of fans. “I read the book (Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein) when I was 12 … it was the powersuits that made the book,” Van Dien said. The BD Live-only panel is one of many features on the release, including the ability for an owner of the title to take his or her picture, upload it to Sony’s BD Live site and insert it into the film. That feature also is available in the upcoming Blu-ray Disc of the original Starship Troopers. ‘MATRIX’ TRILOGY HEADING TO BLU-RAY By John Latchem arner Home Video releases the eagerly anticipated The Ultimate Matrix Collection on Blu-ray Disc Oct. 14 (prebook Sept. 9) at $129.95.
